This wildly off-beat comedy is about a male dancer (Paul Mercurio) who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates the ballroom... read more read more... dancing establishment. Before he's scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he's forced to take up a new partner (Tara Morice), a beginner who initially seems without promise. With his help, she turns into an assured and wonderful dancer. Baz Luhrmann's visual style may be too bright, gaudy and exaggerated for some tastes, yet he treats his characters with compassion, which makes Strictly Ballroom such an engaging comedy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

"Vivir con miedo es como vivir en medias."
I thoroughly enjoyed this film!! It was bright! It was jazzy! It was fun! It was unique! And above all.... AUSTRALIAN! Baz Luhrmann will never cease to visually dazzle me. Gorgeous and sweet!

Pretty enjoyable romantic dance movie, before it became a craze.

A weird assortment of motley characters who don't really have a purpose in the story other than to be weird. I liked the dancing, and Baz Luhrmann's...don't know how to describe it, Japanese game show...? visuals were to say in the least, original. But, it's not much of a story, ... read moreand I don't think it ever is with Luhrmann actually (Moulin Rouge = courtesan dies, Romeo and Juliet = they both die, this one = nobody dies but they hook up, which is good), and it's sort of funny sometimes but I guess I don't really GET Australian humor so I don't know. On the fence with this one. Paul Mercurio is super sexy, nevertheless.

More screwball comedy than the rest of the Red Curtain Trilogy and I dig that.

Strictly Ballroom is a gem of a import. This film from Australia has a great cast and soundtrack. I went to see this at the theatres when it was released in the states and loved it. Tara Morica and Paul Mercurio shine in this film that has a strong ensemble.

This is a great little film to kick-start Baz Luhrmann's red curtain trilogy (which also includes William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge, two more outstanding movies).

This film is a visual triumph, particularly in the makeup and costume department, and turns... read more the usual, predictable and pedestrian "Rocky-plot" into a truly engrossing, magical and inspiring film. Great characterization and strong acting, but nothing really shines too brightly: every aspect of the film is done fairly well, making you suspend your disbelief in the way only Luhrmann can make you do so. A beautiful little movie that really should be seen - and it should be noted that I HATE movies about dancing... if you only watch one ever, this classic makes it clear that it had better not be Step Up...

Saturday Night Fever played for laughs. Not my cup of tea, but it's the kind of quirky, self deprecating comedy the australians are very good at.
  • February 3, 2007
This is the happiest and funniest in the ballroom dancing contest I ever saw. Paul Mercurio is incredible and more impressive in his dance sequences.
  • October 30, 2006
The best film done in a very long time.... a must-see on everyone's list.
  • November 29, 2006
11/29/06: Of course it's cliché, but that's the point. Strictly Ballroom is a very sweet, charming, beautiful movie that is ultimately quite touching. I found it very refreshing to see a cast of competent actors who I had never before set eyes upon. The dance scenes were so much ... read morefun.

Listen to the rhythm of your heart in Strictly Ballroom, where tears and laughter blend seamlessly in an extravagantly theatrical story about love, dreams and overcoming your fears. Full Review

Though made for a fraction of [Moulin Rouge]'s budget and with no big stars,Strictly Ballroom is the better film in every way. Full Review

More fun for ballroom enthusiasts than for the rest of us; cheeky, but totally overloaded.
