Star Trek: Insurrection manages to recall the original 1960s series' spirit of liberalism, while transcending it for sheer boldness, embracing issues that are on the political cutting edge in the 1990... read more read more...s and beyond. The fact that the first 30 minutes are presented as a mystery only makes the material more engrossing. While assisting a survey team of Federation allies observing the populace of a distant planet, Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) seemingly goes berserk and attacks the survey team, exposing their existence to the populace and jeopardizing the mission. Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) brings the Enterprise into orbit to try and apprehend Data and find out what happened . He discovers that the mission isn't one of observation, but the involuntary relocation of a small, peaceful population, undertaken by the Federation and its rogue planet allies the Son'a, supposedly to secure the planet's youth-restoring qualities. As it turns out, there's a much darker side to the plans of the Son'a, and a personal side to the carnage planned by the Son'a leader Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham). Picard and his officers, suitably outraged by this violation of the Prime Directive -- that no Federation mission may interfere with the natural evolution of an alien culture -- take matters into their own hands in an attempt to expose the plot to public scrutiny, risking their lives in the process. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi

This was a very interesting Star Trek film, quite different from the others, I remember. I only wish I could see it again, since the story escapes my memory.

Another dull, uneventful Star Trek film. This was weaker than First Contact and together they have put me off watching Nemesis. Long slow and boring with average effects. Definitely one for fans only!

The best of the odd-numbered Star Trek films, Insurrection doesn't boast nasty villains or relentless dangers, but plays like a great extended TV episode, employing a compelling plot that works as a smart political criticism to the Western imperialism.

It?s like one of the rubbish episodes where they go onto a gypsy planet because they ran out of budget!

Decent special effects, but that's all. Worst Star Trek movie ever, without a doubt.

During a rewatch of the whole series I was suprised to find that I liked this flick way more than I remembered. It's a fun movie with the cast looking like they are really enjoying themselves.
The story itself is pretty good with the right amount of time spent on each character.

Don't let some of the bad reviews for this film put you off watching it. I finally got around to watching it last week and I must say that It was no where near as bad as what some people have said about it. In-fact I thought it was pretty good. It's not the best Star Trek film bu... read moret it's not the worst either. Some people have criticized it by saying that it looks like an extended television episode- All the films except 'the motion picture' have - what's the point of changing the television look and feel when it is so good? The one time they did try to change it from the episode feel (the motion picture) it was crap. Come on people, this is Star Trek - what were you expecting - this was not meant to be another Shawshank Redemption. I like this film so I'm going to give it 8 out of 10 because I don't care what other people say.

Well I come to the next to last film with the Next Generation cast and here is my verdict, not good, not bad, not much of anything. The enjoyment I felt in this movie was entirely due to seeing the characters again; the story was confused and uninteresting. It wasn't until some t... read moreime had passed after I'd seen it that I finally realized that "Insurrection" referred to Capt. Picard! Oh, yeah, he's breaking some kind of rule -- the problem is, the "authority" he was rebelling against seemed so distant and unimportant, it was easy to forget that there was any other dimension to the story than the shooting and hide-and-seek between the heroes and the bad guys. The whole plot was boring and uninvolving, probably because the pastoral Ba'ku who need protection are unbelievable even in a science fiction movie. A race of hippy immortals who know all about advanced science, but choose not to use it; do we know anyone who prefers to haul their water by hand and lug it to the house if a better method is available? Anything more advanced, it seems, would be "corrupting", but they are willing to accept the help of the more advanced weapons Picard and his crew are equipped with when push comes to shove. The romance between Anij and Picard was merely exasperating; perhaps they thought this movie would be daring and original by showing the captain falling for a mature woman instead of the usual twenty-something who sets her cap for him, but Anij overdoes the Earth-mother bit. It's hard to believe Picard could have anything to say to this po-faced bore; when they settle down in a glen for her to teach him about slowing down time, I searched in vain for the standard incense sticks and windchimes. Oh, but I forgot - she's brilliant, too.

"First Contact" was genuinely exciting and engaging; several times during that movie I caught myself wondering "how on earth are they going to escape?" This movie, by contrast, was a plod. At one point late in the movie my attention wavered, I missed one line, and from then on had no idea what was going on or what was the point of the climactic duel between Picard and the arch-villain. I still haven't really figured that out, because I would have to watch the movie again to do so, and I don't intend too. For die hard Trek fans only

Who took our money and made this film? It was like a regular episode of the series with slightly better effects. Nothing really spectacular happened in this one. We develop no new insights to the characters or their situations in the Star Trek universe. It's so forgettable, and r... read moreegrettable they didn't invest more into the story of this off-shoot.

Plays like an overlong episode of the TV show.
