Spider-Man follows the template of the original Stan Lee/Steve Ditko source material, with hero Peter Parker an orphaned, intellectual teen loner living in Queens with his aunt (Rosemary Harris) and uncle (Cliff Robertson), and dreaming of the girl next door, Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst). On a field trip to a Columbia University lab, Peter is bitten by a genetically altered spider and overnight he gains superhuman strength, agility, and perception. At first, Peter uses his powers for material gain, winning a wrestling match with a purportedly lucrative prize. But when Peter apathetically fails to stop a burglar from robbing the wrestling arena, a tragedy follows that compels him to devote his powers to fighting crime -- as the superhero Spider-Man. When he's not busy fighting crime in a spider suit, Peter moves into an apartment with his best friend, Harry (James Franco), and begins work as a photographer at the Daily Bugle. Meanwhile, his do-gooder alter ego finds a nemesis in the form of the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), a super-powered, megalomaniacal villain who happens to be the alter ego of Harry's father, weapons-manufacturing mogul Norman Osborn. Spider-Man was written by the prolific blockbuster scribe David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Panic Room). ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

The first half of the movie was very good. Why? Because Amazing Fantasy #15 was one of the greatest stories from a comic book and the movie adapted it very well. The other half of it was just as standard as other (comic book) movies . This is a bad sign for the next movie!

Sam Raimi- The Director of the 'Evil Dead' Trilogy, has created a superb beginning chapter for Spider-Man. What it succeeds in is the dark atmospheres and the strength in characters. The highlights are Toby Maguire and Willhem Dafoe. While Maguire gives off a truely confident and... read more heroic role, Dafoe presents a powerful and sinister villian.

For a 2002 superhero comic-book film. It was the most visually stunning film of that time. Sam Raimi presented some comedy, some suspense, some peril and some romance. Altogether provided a good mixture to make this film one of the best of all-time. 4.5/5

All the energy, all the talent and all the potential which i once saw in director Sam Raimi's early films goes down the drain here.
What surprises me most with this film is the fact that director Sam Raimi has made two hours of lifeless and artificial nonsense and truns it in th... read moree final third into horrible America propaganda cloaked as a some sort of a film adaptation of Spider-Man.
There is not a single good thing to be said in here. Tobey Maguire is without any charisma or depth which character like Spider-Man would have needed to come alive. Actors like Willem Dafoe, James Franco or Kirsten Dunst are equally lost with their cardboard characters.
There is sadly nothing that reminds me of the glory days of Raimi here. He is director who once made visually splendid Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2, which both are cult classics these days. It seems that he has lost his talent while working in Hollywood with bigger budget projects and especially among with this lazy franchise called Spider-Man.

It's cheesy, yes, and silly at times, but despite its heavy flaws the film is far superior to the 2012 remake as a result of an intriguing villain, better writing, and a higher degree of suspense.

the cast is the problem, and the design for green goblin, but the campiness of the film worked for me and overall i was very entertained.

Even with all it's cheesiness, Sam Raimi's "Spider-man" stands as one of the greatest films of all time in the superhero universe, and it has one of the greatest superhero stories to be told. It may have it's cheesiness running throughout, but who better to present us with that, ... read morethan the one and only Sam Raimi. Almost every superhero film can be laughed at through it's corn, but the fact is, when you watch a piece of fiction, it doesn't matter whether it's believable or realistic, because it's meant to be fake. "Spider-Man" is my favourite superhero, and this is one of the best superhero films out there. It may not follow the comic books very well, but when you have a film that is constructed as well as this, you cannot make an argument that this film is bad. I absolutely love this movie, but sometimes it becomes a little too silly!

With the new "Amazing Spider Man" movie coming out and relaunching the series, it ultimately makes this movie(and it's two sequels) irrelevant. However, that doesn't make it any less entertaining. Tobey Maguire is Peter Parker(well, Andrew Garfield is now, but it's TBD if he's ... read morebetter). He makes you cheer for him, feel his pain with Uncle Ben dies, and really takes you on the journey with him as he becomes Spider Man. This is a great origin story, one of the better comic book origin movies out there. Kirstin Dunst as Mary Jane works fantastic as well, and you can see why Parker would be head over heels for her. Heck, the movie features one of the best/romantic on screen kisses ever. The effects after 10 years feel a little cheesy, but not in a bad way. Guess you could say the movie has a true "retro" feel, that most modern movies don't really have. The biggest issue with the movie is the villain, Green Goblin. Willem Dafoe does great as the maniacal Norman Osborne, but once he has that ugly suit on, he is laughable, not menacing at all. Other than that, the movie is nearly flawless, and really sets the stage for what would be a good 1st trilogy of Spider Man movies.
