Decent version of the famous story with Goran Visnjic stalwart in the lead. Good production values and a consistent pace help this as well as many fine supporting performances, the best of which is given by the great Alan Bates, an actor of enormous scope, in his last role.

I am Spartacus! They don't make movies like this anymore. Movies like this were based only on solid acting and good directing. Nowadays, special effects can make an otherwise horrible movie good.
