I thought the actress who played Sister walked away with this movie (Carmen Ejogo). I thought Jordin was supposed to be the star in this, her debut movie. I love her voice; a beautiful girl, but one who should take acting lessons before she makes another movie. Whitney was just s... read more

"Sparkle" is a good musical melodrama but not much more than that. It stars Jordin Sparks, in her acting debut. Ms. Sparks is certainly competent, but I don't expect her to have a huge screen career.
The stand-out is Whitney Houston, in her last screen performance. She's not ... read more -
September 12, 2012fb720603734The original SPARKLE was set in 1950s Harlem, and this remake moves things to 1960s Detroit, perhaps to better link things to the Motown era and distance itself from DREAMGIRLS. Regardless, my experience with both films was rather similar. Not great by any means, but filled wit... read more

I don't really see too much potential in a dramatic study on the rise of Robin Scherbatsky as Robin Sparkles, but I do indeed love "How I Met Your Mother", so I reckon I'll run with it. I can think of quite a few people who would say that I probably shouldn't even joke about that... read more

Not so much a Sparkle as a Glimmer, Whitney Houston's heavy-handed swan song showcases an uneven musical that's light on music and high on one-to-grow-ons. Showcasing more drama than songbook, this Afterschool Special is such a blatant cautionary tale that Houston actually uses t... read more

The film was so so. It kind of reminded me a lot of Dreamgirls. However, I liked that film better than this one. I never saw the original. On the positive, the performances are really good. Carmen Ejogo steals the film from Jordin Sparks. Ejogo is really good and maybe Oscar wort... read more

August 16, 2012fb1025970122Sparkle is a story we have seen over and over again. In many ways its hard to see the film as a legitimate theatrical release because it feels like something tailored more to the VH1/Sunday afternoon type viewing than it does a night out with friends or a date. We have heard the ... read more

I liked the music, costumes and plot. I don't think Jordin Sparks is that great of an actress to lead a movie all by herself though. She's not terrible by any means, by she needs improving. The best actress was probably Whitney Houston. I also felt that they rushed some of it. I ... read more

Loved it RIP Whitney, first acting job for Jordin Sparks I think she did a good job, did'nt care for the actress who play the role of sister but she is new to the scene. This was a great twist from the original I'm use to seeing Mike Epps in silly role but he surprised me.
