An informative and emotionally involving portrait of an important subculture, Sound and Fury allows us a glimpse inside the world of the deaf community, while dealing with a controversial operation th... read more read more...at some people in that community are resisting. Cochlear ear implants have allowed many deaf people to hear and learn to speak, but many in the deaf community who are happy with its supportive and nurturing atmosphere see the operation as a threat. The film focuses on the Artinian brothers -- Peter is deaf, Chris is not -- who are faced with the same decision over one of their children. Peter is married to Nita, a deaf woman, and the oldest of their three deaf children, five-year-old Heather, decides she wants the operation. Her parents are torn, wanting to accede to Heather's wishes but afraid of losing her to the land of the hearing. Chris and his hearing wife, Mari, also have three children, but only one-an infant twin-can't hear. They (and Peter and Chris's hearing parents) are all for the operation, and the film charts the progress of the debates among the family and their final decisions on the operation. Sound and Fury was screened in competition at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Tom Wiener, Rovi

There is so much to be said about this documentary, but mostly I'm impressed by how frustrated, emotionally charged, exhausted, upset, and downright angry it could make me. Proof that decisions, no matter how logical they might seem, are always up for contention.

when it comes down to it, this documentary is about two sides of a family that have very different views on the subject. both views are expressed and given even coverage...and while i think both sides were overly critical of the others' decisions, i can't throw too much criticism... read more myself, not ever having to deal with such a situation. i will say that the parents and grandparents did seem to be serving their own wants over the children (which is a bit frustrating as a viewer), but that's pretty much the case in any situation where the kids aren't old enough to make their own decisions. interesting watch, but i would have liked to have seen a film with more subjects going through this situation rather than dealing with people within one family circle.

A difficult and engrossing debate. Once the film sets the audience up with some sense of understanding deaf culture, it's hard to stop watching the heated arguements.

Intellectually absorbing and emotionally gripping, and it rather skillfully forces us to think about the 'blessings' of technology with a whole new kind of wariness. Full Review
