Poor! Scary but the acting just made it terrible!
  • October 24, 2010
Cast: Jamie Chung, Rumer Willis, Audrina Patridge, Carrie Fisher, Briana Evigan, Matt O'Leary, Matt Lanter, Margo Harshman, Julian Morris, Leah Pipes

    Director: Stewart Hendler

Summary: When a prank results in the accidental death of a Theta Pi sister, the sorority's members... read more keep the crime under wraps. But as graduation rolls around, a masked killer begins stalking and slaying the girls responsible for the death. Someone is out for revenge, but who could know about their dirty little secret?

My Thoughts: "Typical in all aspects, but I really liked the style of some of the killings and the cattiness of the girls. The smart-ass remarks from Cassidy and Jessica was entertaining. But the film failed to scare me or to even make me jump. The killings happened quite fast, and there just wasn't enough blood and gore for it to be a slasher. Big disappointment for me."

"Well, to the bitches of Theta Pi, I'm saying farewell."

When a couple of members of a sorority pull a mean-spirited prank, one of them ends up dead. The others cover up the incident in order to not ruin their own bright futures. But a few months later they find out that someone... read more knows about what they did, and they're angry about it. Angry enough to kill.

Sorority Row is nothing more than another slasher flick where lots of hot chicks get picked off one by one. And it's not a particularly good one, either. Some of the kills are a little cool/creative, but the movie is only entertaining sporadically, and the final reveal of the killer and their motive is outright ridiculous. As are many of the decisions made by the characters. The movie is also far too long, and spends too much time in the inconsequential lives of characters that are kill fodder.

If this is on tv and you have a desire to see a bunch of sorority cliches of varying bitchiness get killed, and you really have nothing better to do, it's not a complete waste of time. Just keep your expectations suitably low when it comes to scares, T&A, cleverness, and anything else that the best movies in the genre do so well.

The murder scene was okay, the chasing of the victims by the suspects, then the cast was doing all right... But the mystery about who is the serial killer, it was distracting for me... I thought the killers didn't have a really big motive to kill them all... Overall movie was oka... read morey, but for me it could be better again... And I don't get it with what they want with the ending, I thought it was ridiculous...

    Really stupid.

You know those movies that are strangely more enjoyable when you watch it for the first time on TV while channel surfing? Well this is one of those movies. It even feels like a made-for-tv movie, one with a higher budget and better performers. I believe the only way Sorority Row ... read moreshould be viewed is on a late night HBO TV program or something. Sorority Row reminds of a far superior version of the 1997 TV movie Killing Mr. Griffin, but on the other side feeling like a washed down version of I Know What You Did Last Summer. It's right in the middle of both total crap and good entertainment. To sum that up, Sorority Row is an average horror film (or so I said after watching the DVD), but if I was to catch this on TV late at night, while lying on the couch desperately looking for something to scare me as well as entertain, and stumbling across Sorority Row without any knowledge on it's reputation, I would tell my friends that I saw a "great" horror movie last night. But of course I've heard of Sorority Row before. I've seen the original so I already got the gist of things. I read reviews all over the internet, even by accident while trying to avoid spoilers I would accidentally glimpse at a comment made about the film. It's hard to avoid blockbuster movies over the internet these days. But I also find it to be unfair judging a movie like this and deducting a star just because it would have looked better on television as a movie premier. There are just those movies, very few in comparison to box office films, but there just those few that manage to sneak under your nose and catch you by surprise by the touch of a remote. Being that Sorority Row is just that, a movie with a TV feel, and having "TV" written all over, I'll be fair and say it's an above average slasher (because it's not a bad movie). It doesn't suck. I have to say it's very entertaining, very typical, but pure entertainment. It's not scary, nor suspenseful, and it's not really that violent. But it is a morbidly twisted "who-done-it?" mystery game that looks pretty and sounds good. The performances are tight, the script is cleverly tasteful, and the colors are appealing to the eye. It's well crafted. Some moments of shocking violence, but not much and too far in between. It really doesn't put a dent in things though, the movie's still fun to watch. I recommend this to fans of the genre, but don't expect something new on the plate. If you seen this, you've seen them all, but that's no reason to complain about a movie, especially when it still has the power to entertain such as this one. Isn't that why we call it the "entertainment business"?

Pretty much a no-name cast with the exception of Rumer Willis, (and I am not sure that is a recommendation, although honestly she was not bad in this). The characters are all really well written, (if not to say actually likeable, really mostly a pile of nasty little bitches, but... read more very entertaining to watch). I especially liked Margo Harshman as "Chuggs" -now I was............SPOILER........................ sorry to see her killed off first. What a train wreck she was, and certainly one of the more original deaths I ever saw in a slasher film,
It is funny in places and only slightly let down by the killer at the end. Well worth a look for anyone who likes this genre.

I found myself being more into it than I thought I would be and kept guessing who the killer might be. Of course it's not the best, but it was somewhat entertaining for the time being.

Jessica: Okay, we cannot let Ellie see this text.
    [Ellie screams from upstairs]
    Jessica: Shit! Too late.

Even with the R rating, this film still can't satisfy any aspect of a horror film beyond the standard cliches of things jumping out at young, scared girls.

Because we neede... read mored a new version of the modern classic - "I Know What You Did Last Summer," this film revolves around a group of sorority sisters who have a prank completely blow up in their faces, resulting in the death of one of their best friends and fellow sisters. 8 months later, stricken with grief after covering up the murder, the girls begin to receive alarming text messages on their last night in college. Soon the body count starts.

Beyond being a failure on a storytelling/acting level, which isn't really necessary for this kind of film, I was surprised how unbloody this film was. There were some creative ideas for deaths, I guess, but the film really didn't make the most of these. Add to that the over direction, which managed to make the film look shiny and nice, yet still fail at establishing tension or suspense. Finally, it never helps when the majority of your characters are annoying.

Pretty lame, expected, but still lame nonetheless.

Cassidy: [while returning to the party] Where is everybody?
    Claire: Probably dead.
Jessica: Yeah, and the corpses drove their cars home, idiot!

Sassy, bitchy, scary and good-looking. This should be a House Bunny meets I Know What You Did Last Summer, anyway this is other remake of 1980s slasher flick, The House on Sorority Row. Surprisingly, it proved to be lots of fun and the string of murders were ... read moreamazing. You know what I was thankful to see Rumor Willis' character survived at the final because I supported her as my former favourite actress Demi Moore's daughter.

Call me the sarcastic sister, but the only thing screaming in any convincing way here are the cheap look, epileptic direction, and off-key, "edgy" humor. Full Review

Sorority Row is an interminable mess of a film that juggles more characters and undeveloped subplots than it can handle and even manages to bungle the setup.

The tedious flick offers little more than a few scares, and plenty of boobs. And we're not just talking about the cast. Full Review

It lapses into that familiar category of movies that go in for lots of fancy obfuscation along the way only to make its story seem all the more simple, trite and contrived by the finish. Full Review
