In a gender-reversed version of his previous hit Pretty in Pink, John Hughes retreads all-too- familiar ground in Some Kind of Wonderful, the story of a sensitive, young would-be artist, Keith (Eric S... read more read more...toltz), who vies for the affection of his high school's popularity queen, Amanda (Lea Thompson), seemingly out of some deep-rooted insecurity regarding his social ineptitude. He enlists the help of his butch best friend and fellow misfit, Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson), unaware that she secretly pines for him. While she goads him to give up his pointless pursuit of Amanda, he encounters one other small obstacle -- Amanda's rich bully of a boyfriend, Hardy (Craig Sheffer), who threatens Keith with a face rearrangement. Undeterred, Keith decides he will, by any means necessary, escort his dream girl to the prom -- but not before he buys her expensive jewelry with the money from his college fund in order to impress her. (Hughes expects the audience to side with Keith when his father protests.) Some Kind of Wonderful is pure fantasy, but the plot is too tired and flawed for it to be completely satisfactory escapism. Still, the performances are all-around good and the ending is slightly more likeable than its predecessor's. Hughes decided to use the original Pretty in Pink ending, which had been dropped from the original after poor audience response at the advance screenings. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

Cast: Eric Stoltz, Lea Thompson, Mary Stuart Masterson, Craig Sheffer, John Ashton, Elias Koteas, Molly Hagan, Chynna Phillips, Maddie Corman, Candace Cameron Bure

    Director: Howard Deutch

Summary: In this 1980s classic from writer-producer John Hughes, Watts (Mary Stuart ... read moreMasterson) is a tomboy who has a crush on her best friend, Keith (Eric Stoltz). But her feelings go unrequited as Keith falls for the hopelessly feminine Amanda (Lea Thompson), a rich girl with snobby friends. Unfortunately for Keith, Amanda's ex-boyfriend wants her back and is willing to do anything to get her. But does that mean he and Watts are destined to be together?

My Thoughts: "I am a huge John Hughes fan and I love all his films. "Some Kind Of Wonderful", has been a favorite of mine since I was very young. I remember watching it with my older sister and all of her friends. The film has some really great and fun character's, like Duncan. I loved that character. The story is relatable and is full of teen angst. This film goes with the saying that girls and boys can't just be friends. The sound track is good as well. I own this movie and watch if often. Just one of those movies you watch that takes you back in time. Great story, character's, and acting. A must see John Hughes film."

A cheesy 80's teen romance, but exactly the type of film that epitomises that era for me.

Never knew this was Eric Stoltz though!

Lea Thompson is sooooo pretty it's no wonder the protagonist was obsessed with her. The love triangle situation was handled with panache, and the kissing scene, where Mary Stuart Masterson literally shakes from toe to tingle with desire - is the one of the best of its kind.

Another 80s classic written by John Hughes, if you liked his other movies, you'll like this one too. It stars a fantastic cast, I especially liked Thompson. This teen romance drama is sweet, funny, and beautiful. I highly recommend it.

Can a guy as good-looking as Eric Stoltz, a guy badass enough to tempt Death by walking in front of a train, actually be the outcast of his school? Yeah yeah, life is hard for beautiful people too.

The movie's nice with some dark moments - Amanda's monologue about turning into ... read morewhat she hates, Keith's conviction at throwing away a possibly brighter future for one night of glory, the looming danger of Hardy's moneyed entitlement.

It might be cliched and follow the stereotypes of high school, but I don't really care. That's what all the John Hughes movies have in them, so it's to be expected. This definitely has the least amount of cheese and sappiness in the bunch, having very real characters at the cente... read morer of everything. The overbearing soundtrack sort've works in this due to the amount of attention around music and pop culture. Eric Stoltz is great because he doesn't play a flat out geek or nerd, he's just a shy teenager who's unpopular. That's totally relatable to me, so maybe I'm biased in my opinion. But there's also Mary Stuart Anderson and Lea Thompson who aren't the traditional hotties either, they've got very real problems. While some dialogue does seem like it's repetitive, that's exactly how 18 year olds dealing with relationship issues act. The lack of confidence and indecisiveness among them is completely true, even today. I think it's actually one of the best 80s teen movies, if not the best. This covers so much ground and deals with a huge range of emotions that high school kids deal with on a daily basis.

Another Hughes 80's teen flick I missed but really enjoyed having just watched it :) a really nice cast line up too, the beautiful Lea Thompson, Eric Stoltz, Craig Sheffer, John Ashton, Mary Stuart Masterson and a surprise role for Elias Koteas who I still think is a young De Nir... read moreo.

Its a very predictable story about love and bullies which is kinda dull yet still engaging, I admit this is probably because I've had a crush on Lea Thompson since I was a kid hee hee
Masterson is also very very cute in this, Stoltz has a hard choice in who to be with, thats what kept me interested....the two beautiful girls, so gorgeous.

A nice teen flick with an easy ending, some nice scenes of face to face vocal clashes between hero, bully and girl and good acting throughout.

This is the best of the eighties 'US High School/Teen Angst' movies. There were loads, but none to match this one. There's a character in here for each of you to associate with, be it the nerdy Keith, with the bossy younger sister and the unattainable crush, or Duncan, the kind-h... read moreearted skinhead.
