Arthur is a high-school student from a dysfunctional family, and does everything in his power to avoid hanging around the house while mom and dad quarrel. When he's not practicing his trombone and performing with the high-school marching band, Arthur can usually be found bussing tables at the local Chinese restaurant and flirting with older waitress Annie. Annie used to be Arthur's babysitter, and is currently struggling to separate from her former high-school sweetheart, Glenn. But being a single mother isn't easy, especially since the troubled Glenn wants nothing more than to clean up his act and reunite his family. Back at school, Arthur and pretty classmate Lila (Olivia Thirlby) have been bonding over their mutual love for all things geeky. Though the casual friendship shows promise of evolving into something more when Lila expresses her true feelings for Arthur, he can't help but becoming distracted by his chaotic family life: his father is moving out of the family home, and his mother is doing everything in her power to maintain some semblance of normalcy. Realizing that happiness is fleeting as his family becomes shattered and Annie experiences a series of distressing encounters with Glenn, Arthur gradually begins to fall for Lisa despite his growing cynicism concerning long-term relationships. Later, on a cold winter morning, Glenn and Annie's past catches up with them in a blinding flash, and the lives of everyone they know are suddenly and irrevocably changed. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

An overwrought tragedy, that doesn't provide much of a purpose. A good watch for Beckinsale and Rockwell fans, maybe.

"It's easy for...for us to block out the things that upset us. That's what I do. That's what most people do. But it's important that you feel through this." Hmmm. Ah...well. Where to begin with this one?

I had high hopes for Snow Angels. I'm a fan of Sam Rockwell, Olivia Thirlby... read more, and Kate Beckinsale, and was looking forward to seeing them all in an indie drama that seemed promising from all the reviews I've read. Needless to say, my expectations were not met.

Snow Angels had an odd way of becoming less interesting and more muddled as it went along. It's like the writer became less certain of what he wanted to do and the story's message as the movie progressed. The beginning was promising, but by the the time the film meandered to its close, I was thoroughly confused about what the point was of all the interconnected characters and their actions.

I quite enjoy "different" movies, as a rule, but Snow Angels did little for me. None of the performances were noteworthy enough to overcome a story that seemed to lack a central theme after it reaches an emotional highpoint near the middle of the movie. This one left me scratching my head, and not in a good way.

Summary: Based on Stewart O'Nan's novel, this indie drama from writer-director David Gor... read moredon Green intertwines parallel stories about teenager Arthur Parkinson (Michael Angarano) and the broken family of his former baby-sitter, Annie Marchand (Kate Beckinsale). Once the object of Arthur's boyhood infatuation, small-town waitress Annie heads down a fateful path after enduring a stormy relationship with her estranged spouse (Sam Rockwell).

My Thoughts: "I'm a fan of David Gordon Green, and he never disappoints with any film he does. Another dark drama that's depressing from beginning to end. The story of the failed marriage of Glenn and Annie, is the most disturbing and hard to watch relationship in this film. One of Sam Rockwell's best performances. He really was great in this film. The film in a whole has a lot of great acting in it, with Kate Beckinsale and Michael Angarano being two of them. The winter setting really captures the mood of the movie, cold and depressing. Great film, that slowly builds to a very dramatic ending. It's definitely worth taking a look at."

If you like dramas about people struggling with their lives and loves, this is the movie for you. Unfortunately many of the characters in this film are slightly damaged, so there is a lot of struggle. But it is a film to remember.

Easily one of the more depressing films I've seen in a long, long time. It takes a page out of "The Sweet Hereafter" in terms of the setting as well as examining how a small town deals with the aftermath of an incredible tragedy. The cast is in top form, with knockout performance... read mores from both Kate Beckinsale (proving she isn't just some chick with a pretty face) and Sam Rockwell (whose quickly becoming one of my favorite lead actors). The tone is very downbeat and it's not a fun movie to sit though, but it is an interesting one that won't let go of you immediately after it's jarring conclusion. It's not a perfect film by any stretch of the imagination, but is is one that is well crafted and definitely heartbreaking.

A lot of interesting characters, some not exactly likable (Kate Beckinsale). It has tragedy and a love story going on at the same and somehow manages to make that work. It's a pretty good ensemble piece and sets itself apart from most movies like it.

A very devastating story guided by great performances from the entire cast. Kate Beckinsale has impressed me with her dramatic acting abilities in this and Nothing But The Truth. I didn't realize how awesome Olivia Thirlby is until I saw this movie. She was simply delightful. Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckisale turn in brilliant performances in this moving tale of an estranged, alcoholic husband/father, the life of a teenager, an old baby sitter, and an emotionally frazzled young woman. Kind of depressing and I can't see myself wanting to sit and watch it again, but a good movie.

David Gordon Greene continues a fabulous career. Here he shows his skills at adapting other peoples work. Sure it lacks the deeply buried emotions of George Washington and All the Real Girls, and is slightly less subtle, but it is still a powerful and excruciating story. Greene p... read moreulls no punches in delving far into his characters flaws and highlights events from all angles. The film cleverly starts with a gun shot in the distance. The film then goes back to a few weeks previously and depicts the events leading up to the gun shot. In this respect it is also a mystery. Who fires the gun? Were they shooting at someone? Will someone be killed? Why were they shooting? Luckily this never detracts from the story being told. In fact it results in more attention being paid as we try to calculate motives or predict where the film is headed. A wonderful movie, but not one to enjoy in a large group with buckets of popcorn.

So when the film's moment of horror arrives, it's not with suspense but instead the sort of dully anticipatory inevitability that drains as much energy from the story as from the audience. Full Review

It's a movie that keeps its distance from the characters, so much that we can shudder at what we fear is to come but aren't really allowed to mourn the innocent trapped in this downward spiral. Full Review

It's well-made. Searingly acted. Potent. And by the time it was over, its climax realized at the water's edge of insanity and grief, I felt beaten about the head with sticks. Full Review
