In this fast-paced military thriller, Tom Berenger is Thomas Beckett, a tough, grizzled, U.S. Marine Corps veteran sharpshooter who goes through target-spotter partners faster than bullets on his ultr... read more read more...a-dangerous missions. The National Security Council secretly assigns Beckett to assassinate a Panamanian rebel bankrolled by a drug cartel in his bid for the presidency. The NSC also gives Beckett a sidekick: raw recruit Richard Miller (Billy Zane), a former Olympic marksman who's never killed anybody. Miller technically outranks the more experienced Beckett, a source of friction between the men as they make their way through the jungle to find their prey. Once they locate their target, Beckett and Miller not only have to pull off a complex shooting but also must avoid a covert shooter who's been trained by Beckett and is now gunning for them. A Panama native, director Luis Llosa later repeated the trick of crafting a visually exciting genre film out of thin material with Anaconda (1997). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

There is a tiny bit in Sniper one which has 2 versions. The Trailer on flixster shows a different version when the DC guys talk to Billy Zane s Character about his mission in Pananma. Check out 00:21 the flixster Trailer. The DVD version is totally different. I dont know if this... read more was the Theater version?

I love Tom Berenger, probably served as inspiration for the sniper scenes in Saving Private Ryan or Shooter, no joke.

A macho action film that is actually pretty decent. It is entertaining, and not a total waste of time.

Journeyman military thriller seriously lacking in star presence. Berenger attempts to reprise his role from Platoon, but the script has little depth.

Nowhere near the acting job that he did in Platoon, however a cool flick none the less

A solid war film thats unique for its focus on snipers. There really isnt any other good movies that focus so much on the aspect of sniping. Not to mention the fact that tom berenger plays his role perfectly. Certain aspects of the movie could have been better and the plot cou... read moreld have been stronger as well. Yet all in all its a solid film that will entertain.

This was on TV late at night, and it was really a different action movie for its time. I admit, I saw this movie in theaters, I had a war veteran dad that loved war and action movies and would take me to them despite any sort of ratings disclaimers and friends that were just as w... read moreilling as I was to take advantage of the rise of mulitplexes and diassfected teens that were working there to sneak into movies we weren?t supposed to see. I don?t remember who I saw this with, but I do remember sitting in a theater wondering why the guy in camoflauge seemed upset. This isn?t a typical ?soldier? movie. It?s meditative. I?ve seen Marky Mark?s Shooter. Bad movie. Horrible. But I think action movie grunts love it. This movie isn?t high caliber in production, scripting, everything ? but it is true to the story and keeps it interesting. A hidden gem for anyone with interest in these types of movies. Now, I?ve heard there are about 3 sequels that are all ?equally? horrible, but I don?t think part 1 was bad but believe 2-4 are definitely bad. Why isn?t Berenger in more movies? He's not bad.

Billy Zane and JT Walsh....excellent reasons to watch this one. If it weren't for those two, I wouldn't have watched it.

A Marine (Tom Berenger), who just lost his partner, and an expert shot from the National Security Council (Billy Zane) are sent into the Panama jungle to hunt down and assassinate a candidate in some sort of Panamanian election. However, they have to battle one another when it co... read moremes clear almost immediately that the two are like oil and water.

For the most part, there are only two cast members -- Zane and Berenger. They have some pretty good chemistry together as polar opposites. A lot of time, they are just standing their, weapons at the ready, and delivering their lines. If you ask me, there was a lot more time for the two to talk than get into some action. I personally thought Berenger was a bit stronger in his role than Zane was.

The action scenes are pretty quick, and aren't too explosive. If you ask me, the movie leaned more toward the relationship between the Marine and the NCS man more than focused on action. As for blood, it's not a lot, but the gun fights are pretty graphic. You get to see the bullets intended targets get hit, with some pretty good blood splattering from the impact.

The special effects are pretty average in this movie. You get the sound of gun fire, some fairly big explosions and some good blood splattering.

One of the most unique things in this movie is that we get to see the paths of bullets fired. Sometimes, the camera is showing the audience the path of the bullet as if the camera was mounted on it. Other times, the camera appears to be traveling next to the bullets as they fly through the air. And, at least twice, we get to see the bullets from the point of their intended target. I can't recall any other movie that uses this effect, but it was pretty interesting visually.

The villains are not really developed in this movie. You get a little background through the conversations of the two main characters, which doesn't tell much with a few of the intended sniper targets. You get one main villain, but he is mostly seen through eye pieces, and doesn't get a lot of screen time.

I would suggest that you don't rent this one. Maybe check it on HBO or on On Demand.

A solid action movie with an interesting performance by Tom Berenger as a gruff and tough loner.

All it has going for it is Tom Berenger and a whole lot of atmosphere. Luckily, that's all it needs.

The writing here is routine, with superficial characters and plotting that isn't particularly exciting. Full Review
