Billy Bob Thornton's tour-de-force is one of the most memorable movies I've ever seen. It is not a comedy. Although my friends and I love to mimic Karl's voice and do quotes for laughs, there's actually very little to laugh about in this southern gothic drama. Whatever you think ... read more

A nice story with a masterful performance by Billy Bob Thornton. The movie is very slowly paced, but an enjoyable watch nonetheless.

Sling Blade is a pure masterpiece, and is Billy Bob Thortons best performance ever. The plot is a work of genius, it follows a man named Karl and his long journey to self peace, and to help a young boy have the life Karl never got, and it is hard to describe just how good it was... read more

Billy Bob Thorton's performance as Karl Childers is by far one of the greatest pieces of acting in a movie. His complete and utter believability is outrageous, he truly became a different person. Not only that, but a person that very well could exist in the real world. The manner... read more

May 7, 2010fb619846742A depressing, often arresting character story involving a former killer, who is let back into society once he serves his time. Billy Bob Thornton's incredibly restrained performance is what keeps this movie interesting, he creates a character so broken from his former life, and n... read more

Loads of people appreciated & recommended this, but I found it nothing much above average. Fairly watchable, but not a "must watch" IMHO.

Billy Bob Thornton is as good a director as he is an actor and he proves it in Sling Blade (well, at least he does as far as the directing goes). This is a really good film. It?s a shame Lucas Black grew up though as he was much better as a child actor.

Billy Bob Thronton writes, directs and stars in this very moving and very human drama. Thornton plays Carl, a man just released from a psychiatric hospital after killing his mother and her lover, when he was just 12 years old. Carl is a simple man, but like many films, he has ple... read more

Karl Childers, now a grown man, is released from a psychiatric hospital where he has been hospitalized since the age of 12 for the murder of his mother and her lover. He returns to his childhood town and although bein... read more
Critic Reviews
An abundance of long, flat medium shots that rob the film of intimacy and give it a sleepy pace. Full Review
A mesmerizing parable of good and evil and a splendid example of Southern storytelling at its most poetic and imaginative. Full Review
If there were the slightest justice and curiosity in the Academy Award process, Thornton's work here would get a nomination. Full Review
In Sling Blade, Thornton lays claim to the title of hyphenate of the year.
The lure of Sling Blade is both elemental and hauntingly familiar, and I would not be surprised if Thornton's breakthrough film is one day considered a classic in its own right.
[Thornton] does wonders with Yoakam, who could have played a standard villain but always manages to suggest a man trapped within his prejudices.
By its midpoint, however, Thornton has begun forcing both the film's poetry and the preternatural goodness of its simple-minded protagonist, and Sling Blade's sweet charms begin to curdle. Full Review
All the actors in Sling Blade do magnificent work, but it's Thornton who stays with you for days. Full Review
