British actor Peter Howitt wrote and directed this British romantic comedy-drama with a "road not taken" premise recalling the 1921 play If by Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful ... read more read more...Life (1946), and O.Henry's short story Roads of Destiny (1909). Howitt's storyline branches in two directions: Helen (Gwyneth Paltrow) loses her job at a classy London PR firm, has a run-in with a purse-snatcher, and just misses catching her boyfriend Gerry (John Lynch) in bed with his former girlfriend Lydia (Jeanne Tripplehorn). But what if it were one of those days when everything goes right? As the sliding doors close while she stands on a subway platform in the London underground, Helen ponders the events in her alternate reality. The plot of Lord Dunsany's If also hinges on a future determined by catching or missing a train. Sliding Doors was shown at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Gwyneth is absolutely charming. She absolutely makes or breaks this film. Without her, or with any other actress in her place, it would have faltered. The premise is kind of sophomoric but boy does Gwynie act her brains out.

A cute little movie. I was interested to see how Lynch was going to do this but he did an excellent job. Thank God he made her 'look' totally different otherwise it would have been hard to follow. Cunning how he killed off the Helen we wanted to survive but then pulled it round a... read moret the end to have a happy ending where we presume she will still fall in love with James. Great performances.

It's surprising, romantic, depressing, and lovable. Can't find that in a lot of film, can ya? Paltrow delivers another British accented performance with her usual chutzpah.

A great Rom-com with a good cast, I like the way it pans out to show something as simple as missing a train can change your life. Part of this was filmed down the road from where I used to live as well!

Ever wondered how things could have turned out if you had / hadn't ended up with someone? Is there only one person for you? The movie follows Helen and two different sides of her life following a breakup. Excellent concept and story. Great cast.

I love it when people?s heads get hit by the tube doors. Unfortunately it didn't happen in this film! This kind of film has killed the British film industry!

Romantic fantasy presents two alternate realities which hinge on whether or not a woman catches a London train. Unfortunately, neither storyline is particularly engaging. Very intriguing idea ultimately deteriorates into a dull melodramatic soap opera. Gwyneth Paltrow's perfor... read moremance as the woman who's life branches in two directions, is compelling, but Jeanne Tripplehorn as the "other woman" gives a distractingly bad performance. Bouncy pop soundtrack is a plus.

I'm not sure why I liked this movie. It is hard to believe that missing the sliding subway door would have that much difference in your life.

But it was interesting following the two realities. I'm glad she cut her hair in one of them otherwise I would never have been able t... read moreo follow it. The ending pissed me off, but they had to combine the realities somehow I guess.

?Sliding Doors? is a film that when released, finally made sense of those thoughts we all have of ?what if?? It?s a thought provoking piece which leads you to question, whether or not there is such a thing as destiny or fate and ponder many an alternative scenario.

I actually... read more prefer the basis of the story in this film to the Romantic Comedy side of things (no surprise there!) and Gwyneth was someone I found to be an interesting Actress around that time. Paltrow was one of the first American Actresses to come over to the UK and use an English accent, at the time I thought she did a good job, but on re-watching now, it does sound a little forced.

It's not so much the tale itself as the slippery interplay between characters that makes Sliding Doors enjoyable. Full Review

Ultimately, Sliding Doors becomes a victim of its own cleverness, shutting down all that early promise. Full Review

Once the movie throws in a jolting, late-in- the-game plot twist that could have been borrowed from City of Angels, it never regains its balance. Full Review

Gwyneth Paltrow is engaging as the two Helens, and I have no complaints about her performance. Pity about the screenplay. Full Review

Take a supernatural premise, sap cinematic magic of any kind and the result is Sliding Doors.

The script is shrewd and inventive, combining wit, romance, and intelligent melodrama into a crowd-pleasing whole. Full Review

Give the movie credit for being a different sort of romantic comedy, but still one has to regret the failure of imagination. Full Review

Deft enough to keep you wondering whether it's going to end on Track A or Track B.

Unduly smug about its flashy conceit and otherwise utterly empty, the film plays like lobotomized Kieslowski, less Blind Chance than dumb luck. Full Review
