Martin appreciates his wife as a trophy, but at home he abuses her for not keeping the house as clean as he would like it. The verbal abuse descends into physical violence --so much so that Laura decides to disappear rather than live a life under Martin as a brutalized slave. Laura fakes her own death by drowning, and relocates to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she changes her name to Sara Waters. She starts a relationship with her friendly Iowa neighbor Ben Woodward (Kevin Anderson), but her happiness is short-lived. Martin has discovered that Laura has staged her drowning and is coming to Iowa to reclaim his possession. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

One of the first thrillers I saw at the cinema. Julia is brilliant. She stages her own death to get away from her abusive husband but he realises and comes looking for her.

Really really scary. It's sad how things like this actually happen and the plot was really carefully thought about and written well. Julia Roberts was astounding and I had nothing but empathy for her character. Found myself screaming at the T.V and rooting for her. It's a definit... read moree must see!

I like a cheesy late 80's/early 90's thriller and for the first 5 minutes I was loving the cliche ridden imagery with a huge pinch of salt. Then I got tired, bored and frustrated. It's pretty awful actually, sitting through an hour and 40 minutes of it becomes quite painful, as p... read morelot hole after continuity error after cliche started to grate somewhat. It's dated really badly, the subject matter has been badly handled and for a supposed 'Intelligent Thriller' it is neither Intelligent or particularly thrilling.

What happens when a beautiful young woman finds and marries her Prince Charming and he turns out to be a psychotic monster.. The movie, a desperate-to-be-Hitchcockian, thriller, casts, (Julia Roberts) as Laura Burney, whose husband, the suave Martin, (Patrick Bergin), is actual... read morely a vicious, crazy, wife-beating slug!!!!

Not a bad 90?s Thriller, despite my dislike of Julia Roberts in many films. Perhaps not as graphic as such films have now become, but it did portray the fear of control pushed upon the main character and the unstoppable, possessive, aggressive abuser. Maybe a bit too Hollywood ... read morein it?s rose ? tinted ending, but an enjoyable film even so.

A sad marriage is portrayed with Julia Roberts and her abusive husband. I remember the scenes of the cans in the cupboard vividly. Julia has to fake her own death, but the creep figures it out and comes after her. Very Hitchcockian premise, which doesn't really deliver well. Forg... read moreettable.

One of most peoples favourite thrillers about a controlling obsessed husband. Has some great tense, edge of your seat scenes.

This will make you think twice before you marry the wealthy and good looking guy with OCD.

Offensively trite melodramatic take on a very serious subject, dreadfully miscast and misjudged on every level.

Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

It's the sort of movie where all of the characters and plot moves (if one wants to call them that) are tailored to the thriller mechanics and have no existence apart from their crude functionality. Full Review

Roberts is terrific in a layered part. Anderson brings an edge to the nice-guy-next-door role, and the dark, dashing Bergin is chillingly twisted. Full Review

Julia Roberts, a beauty who can also act, is one of the best things in recent movies. By my count she hasn't made a really good movie yet.

The film begins as an unyielding look at a battered wife, and ends as another one of those thrillers where the villain toys with his victim and the audience. Full Review
