This movie is small, quiet and very honest. It was kind of interesting the way, even though the film is called Shopgirl, Mirabelle is pretty much the least interesting character in the film. Ray is probably the most interesting, while Jeremy is an insufferable caricature of a twe... read more

A rare case where I have actually upgraded this a star from my original rating.
I don't think I fully appreciated this movie until I rewatched it. I think originally I expected a chick flick, which it's not, as it is packaged in that way. This is much better than a chick flick! ... read more -

I've said it before - I like stories about relationships, and this suits the bill. In it, Claire, Ray and Jeremy all learn quite a bit about love.

A somewhat muddled story that seemed like it was trying too hard, or maybe that it couldn't decide exactly what it wanted to be when it grew up. If you like the people in it, you'll like the film, probably. I did, hence an extra half star. :)

One of Steve Martin's best screenwriting turns, based on his novella. Absolutely loved it, like all Steve's work.

This is how romantic dramedys should be: smart, perceptive, charming, and full of life, quirkiness, and a touch of artsy-ness. I really liked the writing and direction, but the performances are what really had me. Film producers and studio heads need to take note- romance movies ... read more

Having never read any of Steve Martin's writing, I'm not quite sure WHAT I expected? I guess the best way to describe it is simply as "more"?
The movie was enjoyable.
Very nicely shot, with some truly beautiful visuals.
A solid cast, nicely acted.
Some clever / interesting... read more -

I was bored to tears by Shopgirl. It seems to be stuck in a void between a serious drama like Two Lovers and the surreal trappings of a Wes Anderson movie, but it lacks the appealing qualities of either of those examples.
The story just seemed arbitrary and it didn't flow well.... read more -

It was cute enough, it was kinda slow at times. And the weirdo/random narration/slowing down of the film was strange and I feel like it disrupted the flow of the movie. It seems that they used the same music over and over. I was just glad that I didn't have to watch an actual sex... read more

A minimalist almost-love story told with epic flourishes. Full Review
The sheer charm of Ms. Danes' performance, combined with the convincingly resigned sadness of Mr. Martin and the intense sincerity of the singularly uncharismatic Mr. Schwartzman, make this a deeply b... Full Review
You get the feeling Martin's not really committed to his movie about a man who won't commit. And he keeps us from committing, as well. Full Review
It's a quiet, amusing, sad and hopeful film about the dissonance between age and youth, commitment and freedom, growth and stagnation.
It's not a lack of originality that makes Shopgirl too Saks for its own good; it's the attempt to make a distinctive item into a blue-light special that betrays it.
A movie of exceptional delicacy, so much so that Shopgirl comes close to turning its quietness into a virtue.
A faithful and engaging adaptation, adding Martin's skills as a screenwriter and actor to his fiction talents. Full Review
Shopgirl doesn't reach any cosmic conclusions. Nor is it intended to. But as an observation of recognizable emotions, it's a shining memento. Full Review
A flawed but captivating gem. Full Review
