Hideaki Anno directs this hallucinogenic animated feature, created mostly through a compilation of clips from the wildly popular series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Spliced together with minor amounts of ... read more read more...new footage, the film is meant to be viewed after the ending of the TV series, but before watching Neon Genesis Evangelion: End of Evangelion, to offer a new perspective on the surreal conflux of symbols, metaphors, and subtext. Death & Rebirth recounts the TV series' story of monstrous, destructive angels and spiritually imbued robots, beginning in the year 2000, when an angel named Adam is discovered in the depths of the South Pole. After uncovering him causes a metaphysical breach resulting in an impact that melts the ice shelf -- flooding the world and darkening the skies with ash -- half the world's population is dead, and humanity is now locked in a pitched battle for its existence against these so-called messengers of God. Only 14-year-old children can synch themselves mentally and physically with the giant robots called Evas that humanity utilizes to fight the angels, and just what power lies within the Evas is unclear. In 2015, teenaged Shinji is instructed by his scientist father to pilot an Evangelion, alongside Asuka, a beautiful, but haughty red-headed German lass, and Rei, a quiet girl whose past appears to be connected to Shinji's in strange and unnatural ways. Each of these children has his or her own questions about identity and love, but as the story swells to its climax, the larger questions become ones about who or what God is, and what humanity is afraid of. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

    Ahh, AWESOME! Ok ok, if you haven;t seen the series please watch this movie. It recaps everything(Yes it is a recap movie!). It has a little continuation(Does not have the end of the Anime when in Shinji's mind.). Very awesome. However if you have seen the series you may want to ... read moreskip to the next movie "The End Of Eva" because that has the continuation plus the conclusion to the continuation. This movie only has recap then a little of the continuation before it To Be Continues. So, good movie.

    I think they cut bit segments out of a 50-some episode series and glued them together to pose as a movie. It only makes me want to watch the series, as a movie its just bad.

    zomg I loved it...altho at the end I got mad cuz they just stood there for like 5 min. before he finally killed the him...and why did he smile at Rei like that? And how did Rei get down there anyways??? >.<;

    Didn't really see the point in these films at all. It's just a glorified recap of the series and the first thirty minutes of "The End". Don't waste your time and just watch "The end of Evangelion." instead.

    A Recap on the entire series of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Death and Rebirth is as twisted in the series, and for that, I love it.
  • July 4, 2007
    A crazy, twisted, and amazing anime tale about teenage children whose lives (and mankind) lay in the hands of themselves and an organization which have created robots to destroy alien creatures set on taking over the world.

    Like I could have given it any other rating but a 5. Evangelion still presents me with confusion, which is why I find it so fascinating. I keep coming back every year to watch the series and the movie and each time I find something new, which either makes things easier to underst... read moreand or, in some cases, screws up everything I once thought I knew about the series.

    Death and Rebirth is very fast paced, for crying out loud, they packed like ten hours into one and a half. I still prefer to sit and watch the serise in its entirety, but it was good none the less.

    A compilation of fantastic classical music which I always listen to and a dramatic emotional story that leaves me breathless. A masterpiece.
