I enjoyed Sex and Death 101 much more then I thought I would, not only because of Simon Baker but because I found the film itself was very enjoyable to watch and had a few good belly laughs to boot (one in particular had me laughing throughout most of the rest of the film). Don't... read more watch Sex and Death 101 If you are looking for an average popcorn munching comedy film watch it if you are looking for something a bit different and perhaps odd yet still enjoyable. I was lucky enough to pick it up due to my undying love of Simon Baker and I'm happy I did.

It's not very often that I get the privilege of seeing a film as terrible as Sex and Death 101. I thank everyone for the opportunity to see what crap looks like first hand and appreciate the effort that didn't go into this movie.

The film is about Roderick Blank (Simon Baker) wh... read moreo gets an email listing all of the women he has or will ever have sex with. So what does he do with this information? He proceeds to lay more pipe than a plumber while awing his friends at his sexual conquests. When it's finally revealed that Rodericks last conquest on his list is a Black Widowish killer Death Nell (Winona Ryder) it's almost a race to not get laid in this unfunny spectacle from director Daniel Waters.

The way the movie plays out is about as interesting as a late night infomercial about Spam. Here's the movie in a nutshell: Gets list, has sex, has sex, repeat one and two. If there was actually anything funny in the film it might have been interesting, but we're left with the same stupid quips and the screenwriters passion for films from 1971. Add to this the fact that this film is close to the two hour mark and you get a ridiculous beating to the head as the same schtick continues over and over again. The acting sucks, but not as bad as the screenwriting which tries to be high brow but ends up being just a low rent Skinemax screw movie.

Winona, Winona, Winona. What are you doing here? Work drying up? Easy paycheck? Or, like me, did you expect this to be something more? I mean, you've done wonderful films like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Girl, Interrupted. It doesn't matter that you're the best thing abo... read moreut this movie (well, you and Neil Flynn. Why will no one give him decent work?)

I could criticize this movie for just being an excuse for Simon Baker to make out with as many women as possible... so I will. Simon Baker moves from woman to woman and one has to wonder if he didn't actually come up with this movie just to kiss as many women as he could and hide behind the excuse of it being a movie.

But now onto the two biggest problems I have with the movie. First off, it can't decide what it wants to be. It sets out primarily to be a comedy but it has elements of murder mystery (Winona's character, in her own subplot), sci-fi (Simon Baker visits people who know about his list of women he's going to sleep with), porn (really, I should not have to explain that one) and romance (nor that). I don't mind a mixing of genres but this one is juggling too many balls at one time and is struggling to keep them all in the air.

But now for the biggest reason this film needs to be removed from existance: there's a scene in which Simon Baker's character is raped. By a schoolbus of girls, who use him as a test for the Lord. I will not explain it, as it cannot be explained. And how does the movie treat this? Simon Baker crosses their names off the list and groans. That's right. IT'S PLAYED FOR COMEDY.
Rape= not funny. It's that simple. But then, Hollywood has that double standard. Women can be raped and it's a vile act. Men are raped and people are only appalled that there's no laugh track. Apparently, men like sex that much there is no rape. Between this and The Book Of Revelation, it's like they're trying to eliminate the idea that a man can be raped and it's taken with some degree of seriousness and true suffering.

To end this on a minor note, this movie also has Sophie Monk in it. That's a warning sign right there. All she is capable of playing is "standard hot blonde who adds no real value to story". Sad thing is, she's not even a looker. Just another blonde from the clone factory.

Get the Hell away from this mockery of moviedom.

Seems like I liked this movie a ton better than most. One of the most refreshingly imaginative scripts I've ever had the pleasure of bathing in. It's what I expected Kiss Kiss Bang Bang to be: black black comedy, deadpan, unexpected plot twists, noncommittance, beautiful women an... read mored men. It's not without emotion or avoidance of a happy ending either. A vast, vast improvement from Heathers. I will be sure to check this guy out in the future. My one complaint: Noni was CRIMINALLY underused. And what was with the weird voice?

From Daniel Waters, the writer of the cult classic Heathers, comes the new satirical comedy Sex and Death 101. The film follows newly engaged Roderick Blank, who must struggle with fate when a mysterious source sends him a list containing the names of all the women that he will ... read moresleep with throughout his life. Simon Baker and Winona Ryder lead the cast, and both give strong performances. The film has a lot of fun with sexual cliches and stereotypes as Blank goes through the list. It also presents the struggle between free will and fate in an interesting and satirical way. While some of the satire works, a lot of it is a few degrees off and has some problems with presentation. Sex and Death 101 has some fun and is fairly entertaining, but has its share of troubles as well.

In "Sex and Death 101," fast food entrepreneur Roderick Blank(Simon Baker) is engaged to be married to Fiona Wormwood(Julie Bowen). All goes well until he receives an e-mail with a list of 101 women on it. Thinking about it, he recalls having had sex with t... read morehe first 29 on the list, his fiancee being #29 which would make 72 women that he has yet to have sex with. He suspects the list is an elaborate prank until his bachelor party when he runs into #30 - Carlotta Valdes(Jessica Kiper). After developing cold feet, second thoughts and an existential crisis, he calls off the wedding which gives him free time to pursue #31 - Cynthia Rose(Sophie Monk), a centerfold who is appearing at a local comic book store.(Apparently I go to the wrong comic book stores.) Meanwhile, Death Nell(Winona Rider) is racking up an impressive body count of comatose men...

"Sex and Death 101" is a diverting and offbeat comedy about romantic destiny that handles the topic a bit better than the overrated "Groundhog Day." The movie is clever, not crude or cruel, especially towards the female characters but I still would have liked more time given to Nell's story which is just as interesting as Rod's, if not more so. In fact, Rod ends up being the brunt of more jokes than anybody else.(However, the dark room gag is so old it reeks.) The ending is logical, even if it might seem confusing at first, especially after an Almodovar homage I should have seen coming.

Whereas on the surface the premise might seem sexist, there are some interesting questions posed concerning Rod's course of action which is spurred on by his being something of a shallow cad.(Well, at least he uses a condom.)The moral of the story being to never trust in love at first sight. As in real life, the most enjoyable part of romance is getting to know the other person, especially if it involves a comparison of favorite Vonnegut novels. And Simon Baker is handsome enough that it is not that hard to imagine women throwing themselves at him which might explain the off the wall reference to "Diamonds Are Forever" and the quick reference to Fellini.

Simon Baker does shine in this unfocused film. Winona Ryder and her storyline seem out of place in this film. It should have just focued on Baker's storyline. It was good seeing Fact's of Life's Mindy Cohn in the film. She was hilarious in all her scenes. Also Patton Oswalt is hi... read morelarious in the film. His scenes with with Alpha and Beta in the white room, kind of reminded me of the film, A Life Less Ordinary, of the Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo scenes. The film does have it's funny moments. The film could have been 20 or 30 minutes shorter.

There's alot to be said about this film. It shocked even me in a few places with how far it went (see: dead body, and also school girls). But, much like Heathers, the ending is a bit of a cop-out. I wish Winona Ryder had more scenes because she turns in a good performance. An... read mored why isn't Simon Baker a bigger star? He's great fun. The film is overly self-conscious at points, especially towards the end with a self-referential voice-over. I hated the lesbian secretary sidekick girl. Her voice was so annoying!! Also, the whole concept gets kinda sexist and perverse. That's kind of the point, you might argue though. Well, the exploration of perversion part, anyway. But it's quite entertaining, sexy, original and kinda ambitious, so you can't be too hard on it.

Even if it badly needs editing, runs almost a half-hour too long and chickens out totally in its final scenes, it's still miles above the Hollywood comedy median. Full Review
