Frequent television director David Von Ancken (Oz and The Shield) offers a thrilling meditation on the true nature of revenge with this post-Civil War era tale of a one man's quest to put his nemesis ... read more read more...in the ground, and another man's struggle to survive at any cost. Deep in the snowy mountains of the American West, a lone man named Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) basks, lost in thought, in the warm glow of a small fire. When a shot suddenly rings out and a bullet whizzes just inches from his head, Gideon is suddenly pulled from his repose. His reaction is too slow, however, to save him from the impact of a second bullet fired immediately thereafter; a bullet that painfully lodges itself into the soft flesh of Gideon's tired shoulder. The man who fired these bullets is Colonel Morsman Carver (Liam Neeson), and Carver's goal is to hunt Gideon down like an animal and extract painful revenge for a past transgression that left Colonel Carver forever changed. From this point on, there will be no peace in either man's life as a harrowing game of kill-or-be-killed is played out against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring and deceptively treacherous wilderness where the unforgiving law of the land takes deadly precedence over the civility of modern society. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A western that keeps true to old-time westerns with the entire plot focusing on "Revenge" and "Blood on hands". All of the actors done a great job, the scenery and music is great as well, but the plot is a bit simple.

While the movie is exciting - especially trying to figure o... read moreut which character is the villian or not the villian and trying to figure out exactly why the chase is occuring, you cant help but get a tad bit bored with the chase for the entire movie. I think the writers were feeling the same way as there are a lot of strange and pointless twist towards the end of the movie that seem to keep it going when it should of been over.

Overall the movie is a great western that could of been a 5-star had it been a little shorter with some of the unneeded scenes cut out. However, dont let a few bad judgment calls stop you from watching it because it truly is a pretty good movie with some great revenge and morals hiding behind the cover and as strange and slow as it gets closes off with a pretty solid conclusion.

"How'd you get that scar on your throat? Indians?
    - No worse. Mormons."

The first thing that came in mind, why I liked this movie was, that the two main characters aren't either good or bad. They're just men.

One is seeking vengeance and the other is trying live with the burden... read more of making a serious mistake.

The first half is very interesting, starting as a cat and mouse game and building up the tension between the two men.

The second half has an unusual ending, that bothered me for a while. But later on I realized that it's always nice to see an ending that differs from that what you've been waiting to happen.

The actors did a good job with the assistance of several good supporting actors.

The cinematography is stunning and the story is meant to make you think. Not much is revealed in the beginning.

Highly recommended to all fans of good Westerns.

A pretty decent western with a quality cast. It is very much a tracking a man on the run film, a very dangerous man as it happens. It is wonderfully shot to as the backdrop changes from the snowy mountains, forests, open plains and into the desert. It gets a little surreal in the... read more final third but still an interesting film.

this film started extremely strong out of the gate and stayed that way until there were only 20 minutes left, and then the film fell apart a little bit. the acting and plot were solid and the story was strong for being overly simple, but the desert scene at the end was contrived... read more and anticlimatic. decent western overall.

A gripping, riveting, exciting and well-crafted action-adventure. A powerful story of revenge and redemption in a first-rate chase movie. Beautiful landscapes, great cimatography and a moving score. A triumph. It redefines the classic western picture. Unrelenting and exhilerating... read more. An unforgettable movie. Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson are magnificent. Two great performances by two great stars

If Seraphim Falls had a richer, more complex story, it would be great. David Von Ancken makes a stunning debut as a director. He worked very hard to squeeze every bit of artistry possible out of this story.

The lead actors, Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan, and all the supporting actors also bring everything they can to the screen and do a very fine job. But ultimately this story isn't that interesting or deep. You really just end up with a chase picture. It's gorgeous, but it's still just a chase movie.

Neeson plays a man in approximately 1870 chasing another man, played by Brosnan, across the Western frontier for reasons that only become clear at the tail end of the film. After two hours of brutal chasing, with some of the grittiest and most physical filmmaking you've ever seen, you figure there's going to be some profound reason it's all going on. What an anticlimax to find out why Neeson is chasing Brosnan. Straight out of soap opera.

But the extreme physicality of the filmmaking is really something to see. There's a sequence at the start of the movie, where Brosnan's character is shot and has to dig the bullet out of his shoulder with a large knife. I've seen a million gory scenes in my life. This was not gore. There was barely any blood, but you felt the flesh cutting. I winced probably more deeply than I ever have before. You could feel that knife digging into your own arm. Brosnan was truly screaming, in a way that male actors never do, and it was a long scene.

The character is also in this sequence nearly freezing to death, and I swear Brosnan himself was actually freezing. Von Ancken continuously pushes the actors to the edge of what they can bear to make the strenuousness of Western life come alive in a way I've never seen before in cinema.

Von Ancken clearly is a major talent. It is truly amazing that this is a directorial debut. He controls a set, conveys and sustains a mood, and presents an artistic vision that is of a kind you'd expect from someone in his 20th year of filmmaking.

I pray Von Ancken's next film has a screenplay that's worthy of him. He is capable of producing masterpieces. But he has not made one yet.

"Seraphim Falls" starts in the Ruby Mountains in 1868 where Gideon(Pierce Brosnan) has his delicious-looking rabbit dinner interrupted when he is shot in the shoulder by a rifle belonging to Carver(Liam Neeson) and his gang of four bounty hunters.
"Seraphim Falls" is a violent and fast-paced western that takes a hard left turn towards the mystical in the final stages. Pierce Brosnan gives a determined performance without being able to rely on his trademark charm, and not speaking for long stretches. But the real star of the movie is the forbidding landscape of the American West, giving a glimpse at how tough the pioneers had to be to cross the terrain and make a life there.

A Western short on dialogue and long on pomposity, is little more than an extended chase scene down a snow-filled mountaintop to a desert floor. Full Review

The technical revels are arresting, but Seraphim Falls is slow of motive and thin of plot -- a western that dies with its boots on.

Though the chase threatens to go on too long, the suspense remains high because we don't know which man is the real villain, or if there's a villain at all.

Seraphim Falls isn't completely without interest, particularly for those of us who still like Westerns and bemoan their demise almost as much as we bemoan the demise of the movie musical. Full Review
