The world's least-employable heavy metal guitarist is entrusted with the minds of upstate New York's best and brightest in this fish-out-of-water comedy. Jack Black plays Dewey Finn, axe-bearer for a ... read more read more...fitfully successful bar band determined to win a regional battle-of-the-bands competition. There's only one thing standing in their way: the self-indulgent solos and crowd-diving antics of their "embarrassing" lead guitarist. When his band votes him out in favor of a would-be rock god, Dewey has to make the rent somehow, and after intercepting a call for his substitute-teacher roomie Ned (Mike White), the pot-bellied slacker finds himself in front of a class of elite elementary school students. At a loss for a lesson plan, Dewey takes offense at the pre-teen prodigies' staid musical regimen and makes it his goal to preach them the gospel of The Who, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC -- with the ulterior motive of getting them to compete against his former band for a cash prize. But no matter how willing his pupils, Dewey runs up against the consternation of the school's stern headmistress Principal Mullins (Joan Cusack), the battle-of-the-bands' promoter (Frank Whaley), and not least, his identity-deprived roomie Ned. ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

    Funny

The whole movie is a bit of a cliche and not too funny, but can get entertaining at times. Breaking the fourth wall at the end of the movie doesn't help either.

If you like Jack Black then you'll like this film.

Jack Black's way of conveying idiocy is appealing to both the adult and children audience. Making this film a really good time

Jack Black puts his usual, silly, humorous effort into SCHOOL OF ROCK, a musical/comedy blend that doesn't quite earn its "A", despite the critical acclaim from review compilation sites such as Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, but is a fun, overall funny rockfest. Black stars as ... read moreDewey Finn, a "down-on-his-luck"-type rocker who was just recently thrown out of his band for being (in his band's own words) "embarrassing" as a lead guitarist, screaming out "Yeah!"s and "Woohoo!"s like a total wannabe during bar concerts. Desperate for a career, he is mistakenly told to fill in for a fifth grade teacher for a long period of time, due to her broken leg. Secretly, Dewey takes on the name of his college roommate and decides to teach the students in his class about rock 'n' roll rather than what is supposed to be taught. I wouldn't say this was the best Jack Black film (though I wish I could, since Jack Black is one funny guy). All I can say is: if only this were just a little better. It's a definite one to add to your list if you like the type of comedy that isn't gross-out like Adam Sandler, but isn't overly silly like Jim Carrey, either. The bottom line is if you'd like to see something that really would look good on Broadway as a rock musical, except with all covered music rather than original stuff, you should definitely watch this one.

Not much to say....I guess the name explains the movie

Haha! I absolutely love this movie! I ADORE IT! I wouldn't mind watching it watching this 10 times in a row if I wanted to! This is definitely something to watch one day! This review is going to be short and sweet, as it's near impossible to write this one without spoiling anythi... read moreng, for every little detail has a rather humorous outcome. This dos not mean that it's confusing what-so-ever, just that you could say it would be like something Rowan Atkinson would write. As in (using random example, this is not in the movie... then again, you can't trust me very well) a banana had a bruise that he got at the beginning, no sweat, just a little bruise. Throughout the rest of the movie it was a love story with the banana and a prune, but to keep things interesting, the orange was jealous. He wanted the banana to die, for the prune was is wife! The apple (the orange's father) sent the banana and the pear to Mortal Kombat, because the orange was to weak. Turns out, the banana had gotten to the part where he must finish the pear, but when his fatality got intense, he exploded because the bruise had gotten infected. See? That little bruise that he got at the beginning killed him at the end! It was just so unexpected, just because it was a little small detail! Well, if you don't get it, you might not like this movie... it may not be the one for you... or maybe! Or maybe not... or maybe maybe not... dun dun dun....

Jack Black carries this film on his back with an exhilarating performance that's more than often absolutely perfect but the plot leaves much to be desired without even so much as a twist.

It would be a shame if only kids went to see this film. Adults who can still plug in to their inner rocker, if only to play air guitar, will love it, too. Full Review
