After parodying the blaxploitation films of the 1970s in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Keenen Ivory Wayans takes aim at slasher films of the 1980s and 1990s in this raunchy satire, which was produced under... read more read more... the clumsy but inarguably appropriate title Scream If You Know What I Did Last Halloween. As you might expect, a group of teenagers -- not-terribly-bright Buffy (Shannon Elizabeth), her best friend Brenda (Regina Hall), stoner Shorty (Marlon Wayans), fey football player Ray (Shawn Wayans), loudmouthed Greg (Lochlyn Munro), sexually overexcited Bobby (Jon Abrahams), and his prim girlfriend Cindy (Anna Faris) -- are on the run from a maniacal killer who is looking for revenge after the kids accidentally kill a man following an auto accident. They also find themselves having to contend with intrusive reporter Gail Hailstorm (Cheri Oteri) and eccentric high school principal Squiggly (David L. Lander). Incidentally, the title Scary Movie is something of an inside joke: it was the working title for Scream, the movie that kick-started the mid-'90s slasher film revival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

An obscene parody of horror films that executes with laughter and dark humor. The Wayans Bros. team up to bring their parody-filled skills to the world of horror and suspenseful cinema. And may I say it's so hysterical, that it's scary! 4.5/5

The bad thing in the comercial cinema, is that: filmmakers doesn't want to know if the material is good or he's really express himself with the work that he made, his only concern is the money. Same thing happen in Scary Movie, but it's impossible doesn't laugh with the comedy by... read more Wayans brothers.

Cindy Campbell: Look, if it's about that time I puked green slime and masturbated with a crucifix, it was my first keg party, Bobby!

"No mercy. No shame. No sequel."

There's a lot of sex jokes(gay and lesbian included) and it has quite a few slapstick gags to go with it. Some of the jokes work, and some don't, but their thrown at you every other second, so you're going to get your fair share of laughs; that is, if you are into spoofs. As far as spoofs go, you could do a lot worse. This first one isn't half bad, but the franchise as definitely ran on too long and has gone further downhill with every new installment.

Scary Movie makes a lot of obvious references to movies like The Shining, The Sixth Sense, and The Exorcist. But it follows the plots of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer exactly. If you've seen either or both of those movies, you should get a good amount of enjoyment out of watching them be "reinterpreted." While number two was a spoof of haunted house movies and number three was a spoof on the invasion films; this one is a straight spoof of the slasher genre. And if you're going to pick a film to base it off of; picking one of the best slashers ever(Scream) isn't a bad choice.

I've seen this movie many times now and while I find it less and less funny every time; I still enjoy it. The spoof genre doesn't have too many classics, and this definitely isn't one of them, but it is a better than average one. I wouldn't bet on anyone loving it, but drink a few beers and you'll easily be able to get through this short run time with a smile on your face.

An obvious mickey take that had some rather funny and clever moments parodying other movies. The father of all parodies, this spawned several others. But this is original and an easy watch. I loved the bit with the Scream guy smoking pot, really funny face.

Scary Movie is by the best of the four films in the franchise. This film actually had good humorous bits that actually made me laugh out loud. The film doesn't have the same problem of subsequent sequels, notably the third and the fourth in having good ideas to create an average,... read more funny spoof film. This film is pretty considering that after so many spoof films were released afterwards that became irrelevant and were simply terrible. Scary Movie is funny, silly and stupid, but also fun. Of all the Scary Movies, this is the one I preferred. The film isn't the best spoof film, but it is definitely better than the many films that would follow. Scary Movie has a decent cast for this sort of film, and they're amusing to watch on-screen. The film manages to be funny, and silly, but it is a lot of fun. I enjoyed this parody film of horror films, and I thought that this was the best film of the four films of the series. I think it's a no brainer to see why this film is the best, it's because the ideas were fresh, inspired and the filmmakers didn't try too hard to deliver something funny. The comedy came naturally, the way a goods comedy film should unwind before an audience. Scary Movie isn't the best parody film, but it's definitely not the worst. This is a fun film with plenty of laughs, and like I said, is the best of four films. After the release of Scary Movie, many other spoof films were released, and they all failed to capture the essence of the genres they were spoofing. But this first entry in the Scary Movie franchise is terrific, flawed but a good watch.

Veryyyy dry humor. One thing I will give it credit for, is for spawning all the similar movies to come after: Date Movie, Epic Movie, etc.

  • June 14, 2011
However difficult it may be to accept, the Scary Movie franchise is about as good as spoof films get nowadays. This one in particular isn't much better than its long row of sequels, but it does have enough fun moments to be considered worthwhile. Just don't expect any laugh-out-l... read moreoud material, as the humor overall is pretty cheap and stupid.
