This 43-minute animated feature is Walt Disney's contribution to the wartime "Good Neighbor Policy" between the USA and Latin America. Moving down to Chile, the audience is entertained by the story of Pedro the little airplane, who vows to deliver the mail through the treacherous mountain ranges between Santiago and Mendoza. In the Argentine Pampas, our old friend Goofy tries to acclimate himself to the life of a Gaucho. The best sequence is reserved for last: the Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, with an animated paintbrush guiding Donald Duck and his South American counterpart Jose Carioca on a surrealistic, samba-rhythmed tour of Brazil. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    first of the Compilation era

It's animation is decent, though nothing note worthy and the shorts are fun occasionally but again nothing note worthy.

This era is mostly forgettable though to most shorts being hardly much too be amazed at.

A feature film, more of a collection of shorts, from Disney that was made at the request of the Office of Inter-American Affairs...no I'm serious. This began a series of these type of films from Disney who at the time was not able to finance another feature production like Dumbo... read more or Bambi (something that seems nearly incomprehensible today!) Like most anthology features the quality of each short varies and your overall enjoyment of the production will likely be mixed. Always good to see Goofy and Donald in action though.

A delightful and educational Latin American adventure

One would expect that Disney could make any subject matter interesting, even geography! "Saludos Amigos" is evidence against this, creating a boring geography lesson that cannot even be saved by Goofy. It has been forgotten (or ignored) by most Disney fans and marks a low point... read more for Disney Animation Studios. I understand that much of Disney's animation staff was serving in World War II and the rest of the animators needed something to do, but they could've come up with something better than this. The four animated segments are tied together through live-action footage of the countries, but the quality of each section is hit or miss. Of course the comedy of Donald and Goofy was entertaining but the plot still managed to be boring. And Pedro the airplane? What was up with that? The watercolor animation and samba music of the Brasil finale is colorful, flashy, and exciting - why couldn't the entire film have been that way? This sequence is the film's only redeeming quality, saving it from the dreaded half-star. The only other thing that I gained from this movie was getting to meet Jose Carico for the sequel "The Three Caballeros." It is tough to justify watching this film when there are 50 better Disney Animated Films out there - I would only recommend this to the most dedicated of Disney fans.

This package film is decent enough, but really its just four Disney shorts with a similar theme slapped together. The animation is sort of a step back for Disney, and isn't up to the standard set by Snow White, Pinocchio, or Bambi. Donald and Goofy rule in their segments though.

It was interesting to see what Disney could do with ideas presented to them from different cultures, but, in the end, it was too documentary-ish to be enjoyable. The cartoon shorts were great, but this is hardly a film to be included in the "Disney Canon."

Well done film that feels more like a documentary with cartoon shorts than a film but good none the less. Donald and Goofy are always enjoyable.
