This is a movie that has you captivated with complete interest from beginning to end. Although the story plot dwindles a bit, it's the characters that strikes a most mesmerizing effect. The cinematography is also amazing. Great music! Great cast. Zohra Sehgal truly shines once ag... read moreain. Definitely worthy.

I really wanted to see this film. what a disappointment. You think it is going to be some visual masterpiece with great songs, instead you get okay visuals with so-so songs. I could not remember one song from this film, that is a bad sign, in musicals the music is the life of the... read more story and this film had no life. With such a fantastical story you think the director could have captured some of that.

Wow, people were right, it really was a bore. MIGHT have been good if they'd have cast an actor instead of Ranbir Kapoor.

This is a beautiful story. She is waiting for her love to return to her as he promised he would and meets another man who wants her love but can never have it. The ending is bittersweet and made me cry.

Absolutely love this movie! Then again, I'm partial to Bollywoods. Though Sonam Kapoor's character drove me nuts, always giggling, Ranbir's character was very endearing.

It's been over a year hearing about Saawariya and all the reviews, I finally checked it out on DVD and I have to say I loved it. I think the audience didn't enjoy it as much because the story was simple and the characters were simple, and perhaps the audience left a little unfulf... read moreilled. This is neither the director's fault or the audience. It's based on Dostoevsky's short story "White Nights" and the story is just that. In fact the essence of the story is "only a moment of bliss, Isn't such a moment sufficient for the whole of a man's life?" This is beautifully captured in the movie. The young leads Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor do an excellent job with their respective roles and the supporting players are wonderful. This is one film that elevated my enthusiasm with the amazing songs. Although, Gulabji's dance number could've been omitted and Imman's backstory should've been kept shorter. It would've kept the character even more mysterious.

The look of the film is absolutely gorgeous, like watching a storybook fairytale come to life. Some said the sets looked fake, it wasn't believable, I think that lends to the whole enchantment of the film. I kept thinking how wonderful this story would be on stage, Bollywood style. This is one of my favorite SLB films. I remember him saying in an interview, either people will love it or dislike it, there will be no middle ground, I think he was right on the mark. My only regret is listening to the negative reviews and missing this film in theaters.

"Vivid, colorful scenes that will be engraved in your memory for all times, accompanied by great music..."

Amusing Bollywood musical. It is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cheesy. So if cheese is not to your taste when to comes to movies...avoid this film. I have to admit...I also pissed myself laughing when Ranb... read moreir Kapoor sang in a towel...thrusting hips and doing the "open towel when back is to camera" dance/singing number. His wink to the camera was a bit over the top as well. The production design, set designs, and style of cinematography is beautiful in this film. But, if singing at random, subtitles, and cheesiness are not your thing, avoid it.

Beautiful Sets, Music and Ranbir Kapoor Shines; Somewhat Weak Plot-One of most anticipated films of the year for Bollywood was a hit with critics but a bit unimpressive with a chunkful of viewers. My personal opinion? The movie was carried by the stunning beauty of the landscapes... read more and sets with the ethereal vibe of director Bhansali's imagination coming to life onscreen. The music was also a critical factor in making the movie work-- and it delivered and exceeded expectations. Most of the musical numbers in Saawariya are catchy and engrossing even to a non-Hindi speaker such as myself. Finally, let's not forget the gorgeous and talented cast. Ranbir Kapoor throughly impresses in his debut, a natural onscreen and in the dance sequences. His little ditty with his bath towel had me momentarily forgetting that I was missing the first showing of Shahrukh Khan's new movie(wasn't playing in my area that day). Ranbir was a little weird for breif moments in the film but would recover from them quickly and made me love him anyways. Sonam was flawlesly beautiful but her lack of experience showed more next to Ranbir. Rani Mukerjee was flawless and proved a boatload of critics wrong by bouncing back from her Laaga Chunari Mein Daag role ("See guys? I CAN play a prostitute!" is what she is probably saying now)

For audiences unaccustomed to the format, the film runs too long -- though it is short by Bollywood standards -- and is repetitive, sentimental and cliched.

Saawariya is 2 hours 11 minutes of wide-screen close-ups, fanciful sets, colorful costumes, bellybuttons, almost-kisses and 10 pumped-up, achingly sweet songs.
