By concentrating on character development with this first of several sequels to his Oscar-winning smash Rocky (1976), writer/director Sylvester Stallone earned critical praise that would desert him wi... read more read more...th the boxing saga's shallower subsequent chapters. Stallone returns as Rocky Balboa, a Philadelphia prize fighter enjoying his brief fame after nearly defeating world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). When Rocky is offered lucrative product endorsement opportunities, his limited education and lack of sophistication quickly become an impediment to his future success, causing him embarrassment and his pregnant wife, Adrian (Talia Shire), a great deal of financial concern. Meanwhile, Creed is brooding over his near loss to a fighter he considers an amateur far beneath him and decides to goad a reluctant Rocky into a high-profile rematch. With the family resources dwindling and his pride wounded, Rocky decides that fighting is all he knows and makes the fateful decision to climb back into the ring once more with Creed to vie for the championship belt, despite assurances from all concerned that he will blind himself irreparably. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

This is the sequel that Stallone put his backbone into and tried his best to make something more passionate than the first installment. This first sequel packs a good punch.

Title character marries girlfriend? Very predictable. They have a kid? No spoiler there, folks. Rocky is illiterate? Who knew!

But, who cares? And basically, those two words sum up ROCKY II. The first one was great. It put love in our hearts and success in our minds, and... read more it was uplifting. This one is just as uplifting, but gives a little too much love, a little too scarce aggression. It has boxing, yes, but it's more just the film where Adrian weds Rocky and immediately finds out all these ridiculous things about him. The first I already mentioned.

That's not to say that this was at all a bad film, in any way at all (well, maybe a little bad-ass, for a pun). For a sequel to the film that was awarded the Academy Award for Best Picture just three years earlier, it was both well-received by critics, and it performed fairly well at the box office. Sometimes, though, we just have to wonder: how many of the 71% of Rotten Tomatoes critics that liked this film were given it a "Gentleman's C+" (in this case, using that term mostly to mean critics giving it that it was a good sequel, but as a stand-alone film, it wouldn't have been that great)?

    My predicted rating: 2.5

Worth seeing as part of the series, but it's just like the first with added parts of Rocky's personal life thrown in.

This fails to top the original, but it's one of the better sequels in the series.

They try to expand upon the story and character, which is always cool, but I'm not entirely happy with how they handle things. They don't do a bad job, but this movie doesn't have quite the same... read more amount of heart and passion as the first. It sure tries though.

I do like this movie, and I've gorwn to like it more than I used to, but I can't help but feel just slightly underwhelmed by it. It is at least beter than some of the others though, so that counts for a lot.

A true sequel, continuing on where the first left off. This shows Rocky lose a lot of the respect he tried so hard to get, leading to a re-match with Apollo Creed. In many ways the story is strengthened with this entry because we get to see Rocky really accomplish his goal and ge... read moret the complete recognition that he deserved. While it lost some of the great tracking shots and slow pace from the first, it manages to keep all of the heart and human aspect which is a lot more essential.

I think I liked the second one more than the first one, then again, I'm a big fan of character development in a film.

Yes, Stallone, you really did it!, and this exciting and moving Rocky II is a great follow-up to the amazing first film - proving once and for all that it had just not been beginner's luck.

This movie is a great sequel. Rocky not only has his rematch with Apollo Creed. He marries Adrian and becomes a father. The scenes when Rocky stays by Adrians side during her coma during childbirth shows you that he really loves Adrian. Don't listen to the critics and watch t... read morehis movie. I LOVE IT!!!!!! SUPER AWESOME!!! Great Rematch! The most electrifying rematch in motion picture history! :)

The structure of this film is pretty much the same as in the first, its just a bit bigger, if not a little cheesier in places. You have Rocky running up the steps again but this time he has a billion and one kids with him, he's still trying to get the girl but this time its out o... read moref a coma, but, you get the picture. The good thing is that everything I liked about the first film is improved, specifically, the humour and dialogue between Rocky and Adrian. Its a very witty film and I would go as far to say that its a much better script then the first. Alas, the fight scene for me was a little too much, or should I say, a little far fetched. An unnecessary (but enjoyable) sequel in many ways but then again, you can't have a franchise without one!

Good sequel! Even though it was quite close to the original, it is a good edition to the saga.
