A purposely outlandish cartoon created in 1953, Harvey Comics hero Richie Rich finally came to the big screen in 1994, when a boy billionaire was not quite as fanciful an idea. Richie Rich (Macaulay C... read more read more...ulkin) is the wealthiest boy in the world, but even though he loves his doting parents, Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Regina (Christine Ebersole), he's not happy. Richie wants to play baseball with some neighborhood kids, but his parents instead hire Reggie Jackson to coach him. He wants to go out and play, but instead he gets aerobics training from Claudia Schiffer. When his parents disappear in the Bermuda Triangle, Richie suspects that Laurence Van Dogh (John Larroquette), an employee of Rich Industries, of plotting to take over the company by killing his mom and dad. With trusty butler Cadbury (Jonathan Hyde), eccentric inventor Prof. Keenbean (Michael McShane) and some new friends his own age, Richie puts a plan together to foil Van Dogh's wicked scheme and rescue his parents. Having grown to the point where he was no longer believable in the little kid parts that once made him America's top child star, Culkin took an extended break from acting after the filming of Richie Rich. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Richie Rich may be one of the worst family films ever.
  • August 10, 2011
Richie Rich is a poorly made family film that by today's standards hasn't stood the test of time. I remember when this film came out, and I watched it quite a bit when I was young. However, I look back, and I wonder what was to love about this dreadful piece of trash? I guess it ... read morewas because I was young, and I thought that it was impressive. Hell, when you're a kid, it doesn't take much to be impressed. Richie Rich is a poorly made film with bad acting, bad plot and overall bad directing and bad development. The film suffers too much from lack of story that it's easy to forget this film, and if you've seen it, you want to forget this as soon as you can. Having watched Richie Rich, you understand why Culkin's career went into the toilet. The guy is a terrible actor, and none of his films have stood out in the long run for me. I can name so many classic family films without even mentioning Macaulay Culkin's films. They never really that great. Even Home Alone doesn't make me laugh anymore. Richie Rich is really a death rattle for a terrible actor who plainly got a career because he was "adorable". Culkin is terrible and luckily now, he's making Independent films that will most likely end up in the discount section of a K Mart or Wal-Mart. Richie Rich has a pathetic story, and is simply a terrible family film. Watch classic family films like Toy Story or Casper and The Sandlot. But avoid this trash.

This movie is fun for kids mostly, and it is somewhat like the cartoon of Richie Rich, so that's cool. The story is predictable, and the acting is so-so, but it's somewhat exciting, so overall it's an okay movie.

There's no way I haven't reviewed this before, must have said something outrageous. Not quite a classic, but this is Culkin's swan song as a child actor. Loved this movie, Richie Rich throwin' it down at the Biltmore Estate. Cadbury was great. Everyone wanted to have a kidapult.

    Terrible family film.

This was one tv the other day, and because I hadn't seen it in a while, I decided to watch it. It holds up better than I thought it would. True, it was never a great and original piece of work to begin with, but what it lacks in originality, it more than makes up for with style, ... read morea likeable cast, and the fact that the movie doesn't try to be more than what it is. I'm glad that Ebert was one of the few big critics that liked this. It shows that hje knows the film is more decent than it appears, and that is perfectly acceptable fun entertainment.

Poo. Its for kids who think having a McDonalds in your front room would be cool!

The start of Culkin's downfall into not making good movies anymore, although this one was better than the latter ones.

Good little kids movie. Whatever happened to Culkin? Man do child stars get screwed over.

Most of the time, Richie Rich is too busy oohing and ahhing over the junk that money can buy to relax and have a good time. Full Review

What's sort of wonderful is the way this movie takes that old formula and makes it fresh and new, with actors who give it wit and charm. Full Review

The filmmakers seem to think of their movie as a fiduciary fable, but they're not quite sure about its moral. Full Review

It was fun for what it was...which is not very much, but hey...kids will get a kick out of it for all the fun gadgets.
