Red Tails Reviews and Ratings

George Lucas makes his final desperate attempt at populist money grabbing with Red Tails; a story he claims has never been told on film (the "first all-black action film"). A film that he claims has been suppressed due to Hollywood racism (even though Tyler Perry has three or fou... read morer movies out per year). Well, at least George's vast guilded tower delusion has functioned as a kind of litmus test for the current state of racism towards black Americans... and the only emotion it seems to have sparked is a general state of bemused bewilderment at a billionaire media tycoon playing the race card in the era of Obama.
A fitting way for George to enter his "retirement"; blaming everyone else and taking his toys home to play by himself. Bye, George.

The black characters are boarderline Tyler Perry-types, but this isn't a Tyler Perry movie (thank god). The actors portraying these black pilots do a good job, but they're too sincere to be believable. It's almost painful to watch a war movie and not have any cuss words. It's lik... read moree watching a made for tv Disney movie about the Tuskegee Airmen. I mean the guy who played 'Major Dad' is even in the fucking movie! Give me a break!

What Michael Bay did for 'Pearl Harbor', George Lucas does for the Tuskegee Airmen. The dialogue that spouts from the characters mouths are full cliches and yes the characters themselves are stereotypical. To add insult to injury, they actually try to piece together some kind of "character development" scenes. They don't do anything except keep the film down until it's time for them to fight.

This is film purely based on dogfighting. The aerial battle scenes are what this film is only about. To watch this movie on that alone really isn't bad. If you can get through it's flaws then those awesome battle scenes will surely do the trick. Otherwise, go play a video game.

    Ehhh.

Extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemely cheesy; Cringe-worthy dialogue, horrible acting (Cuba Gooding Jr. is never believable), and directing and editing that brings nostalgic reminders of Disney channel movies makes this minorities-exceeding-expectations flick a bore. The only ... read moreredeeming quality that "Red Tails" represents is the good-hearted story, but the execution is too tainted for it to be considered a film worth watching.

George Lucas has been wanting to make a film about the Tuskegee Airman for many years, ever since watching dogfights on Pathe newsreels while researching Star Wars. Now his dream has been realised and so a film inspired by these men has been made< Inspired but not inspirationa... read morel.

The Tuskegee Airmen are a group of African-American fighter pilots that were left flying as far away from the enemy as possible, because the US Air Force believe that the black men are cowards and won't add anything to the war effort. Colonel Bullard pressurises his superiors into letting his men have a chance by escorting bombers on a mission. They do more than prove themselves although on the ground, team leader Marty 'Easy' Julian and his best friend, the dangerous Joe 'Lightning' Little aren't seeing eye to eye.

The thing that will make this film appealing is the dog fights. Totally CGI, they are impressive to watch and you get thrown right into the action as bullets fly around the screen as planes dodge and duck them. It is mildly exciting but the trouble is once you have seen one spectacular battle, you've seen them all as they soon become a little repetitive.

As for the rest of the film, it's a huge let-down, mainly because of the clunky script which is so full of clichĂ (C)s from the very wooden characters to the sometime laughable dialogue.

The cast, made up of mainly unknown black actors, are not given enough to do to make their characters appealing. We get stock wartime soldiers: the joker, the religious one, the Southerner, the psycho and the leader with problems.

Big names Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr manage to add a little bit of leverage to the proceedings but even they cannot save a film that has such classic stonkers as "Germans! Let's get them!" and "Show no mercy!"

The script limps from one episodic scene to another without anything really being joined together and there are some very dubious historical inaccuracies that even the none historian could point out. For example, Lightning's relationship with an Italian white woman. Pretty sure that if they were seen walking down the street arm in arm, someone would have said something. If the pilots face racism from their superiors and other white pilots, surely a multi-racial relationship in 1942 would definitely be frowned upon.

Throw into the mix moments of sickening patriotic back-slapping and what you have is a film that could have been inspiration and heroic and bringing to the fore-front a story of men that time had forgotten, instead we have a limp wannabe boys own war film that lacks excitement, thrills and any real relevance to what actually happened during World War II. No wonder the film flopped massively at the box office. And unfortunately, I can see the same happening over in the UK.

    Courage has no color

Not great or bad. The movie is full of cliché stereotype characters, bad dialogue and bad acting. The melodrama is heavy and painful at times. It does have decent air battle scenes though and visual FX. Lucas definitely left his stamp on the material. Entert... read moreaining at times but the Tuskegee Airmen deserve a much better film adaptation! My interest was kept throughout the film despite my sore disappointment that the main stars Cuba Gooding Jr., and Terrence Howard were relegated to auxiliary roles. Watch at own risk.

Italy, 1944. As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky - even as they battle discrimination on the ground. It's a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history.

I had been looking forward to seeing Red Tails for quite some time. I am a diehard World War II buff, and love a good war flick. Red Tails is a decent film, that's very flawed, but quite enjoyable if you can past the dialogue, so-so CGI and clichés. The film is worth seeing and I... read more do recommend it as an introduction to this legendary Squadron of African-American Tuskegee Airmen. The film is designed to ignore facts and is meant to be a mindless war film, which it does very well. The way George Lucas talked about the project, it seemed almost as Red Tails was the most important film since he directed Star Wars in 1977 you'd think that he would have put a bit more effort into it, right? Red Tails is a decent film at best. I enjoyed it, but I felt that something was missing from to really make it a worthwhile film. For what it's worth, Red Tails deliver on action, but the story suffers and with the CGI, it really leaves you wanting more out of this film. There was so much potential in making this film, instead the filmmakers went the other direction and told a fictionalized account of the Tuskegee Airmen. I liked the film, thought it was a mindless decent time. However the film could have been improved upon majorly as well. Like tell the real story, not the fictional story. The cast were never anything good or great, but the performance that stood out was Terrence Howard. He made this movie better. If you want a small taste of the Red Tails, check this film out. Thankfully, Red Tails isn't the worst war film ever made, that dishonor belongs to the Paul Gross film Passchendaele, which to this day is an abomination. Red Tails is a decent flick, never anything great, and you realize that it had the potential in being something a lot better as well. Red Tails is an entertaining mindless war flick that opts to provide the viewer with a fictionalized account of the Tuskegee Airmen instead of providing the facts.
