But the project goes awry, and Commander Kate Bowman (Carrie-Anne Moss) is put in charge of a rescue mission to set the system back on its feet. Bringing along astronaut Robby Gallagher (Val Kilmer) and scientists Dr. Quinn Burchenal (Tom Sizemore) and Dr. Bud Chantillas (Terrence Stamp), Bowman and her crew set out for Mars, but disaster strikes and the landing craft crashes into the red planet. The crew is stranded without communications as Bowman struggles to find a way to get them home; to make matters worse, the robot that was designed to serve and protect them has gone haywire, and is now attempting to hunt them down as prey. The second Mars movie in the year 2000 and unfortunately it couldn't better the first offering 'Mission to Mars' but was actually a bit worse.

Again I was kinda hoping for a serious slice of sci-fi with a possibility of some epic lavish visuals and ideas but this film goes compl... read moreetely in the oppersite direction and gives you a more action based silly affair, to be frank you can guess by looking at the cast line up.

Kilmer, Sizemore, Bratt and Moss make up the space team this time and they do give a slightly better or less wooden performance than the team in 'MTM', you do get more of a grounded feeling from the characters instead of the perfect all American poster boy vibe you got with Sinise and Robbins in 'MTM'. Stamp heads the team to really try and give the film some gravitas but good old Terence can't quite get there, in fact his performance is the most stale of bunch oddly enough, I don't think space fits him too well.

You get the same kind of orbital and planetary issues as you would expect, nothing too original, it all looks very nice though, the space suits and ships are cool and well designed and Mars is well presented. The plot is fun and makes you think but overall the film is highly unrealistic (much more than 'MTM' despite that films alien inclusion) but does give a more grounded line of thinking with alien life and how it could work. The problem I had with the film was the sub plot revolving around the man made robot 'AMEE', it just felt disappointing that one of the main risks to the crew would be a 'Terminator' style man made robot.

In all honesty the film is fun and I quite like it, I like the whole space exploration concept and find it never gets dull and would welcome more films where teams explore our solar systems planets. It was a flop and I can see why, it starts off well but sinks fast into your average adventure, nothing outstanding, the 'Armageddon' of the two.

Tame sci-fi with not much of a story leaving the actors without much to work with.

Mediocracy on Mars. Considering I expected it to blow though, that's not such a bad thing. The storyline isn't all that great, but the cast is decent enough and as are the special effects. A little more action and imagination sure wouldn't have hurt though. For this adds nothing ... read moreto the sci-fi realm that we haven't seen and encountered before. My suggestion: go watch Total Recall instead. At least there the planet is a little more alive and exciting.

This sci-fi flick has impressive effects, but they can't hide that the film is, emotionally, barren as Mars. I believe this SUCKS!
Val Kilmer smirks his way through a stupid storyline that drags interminably and botches just about every scientific element in the laughable script.

Red Planet is a below par Sci Fi where we follow a group of Astronauts to Mars to try and solve the problem of the dying Earth.

The film starts well and builds suspense and intrigue and the whole Science vs Faith debate leaves us wondering what we may find. Unfortunately, Red Pl... read moreanet soon slips beyond the realms of believability as Killer Robots, flesh eating aliens and the heavily played on 'Space Janitor' are introduced.

Val Kilmer does a good job and is likable as the Janitor who holds the mission together and Carrie-Anne Moss is always watchable, but everyone else is instantly forgettable including the scientist who turns schizo.

Probably not as bad as some people make out but it doesn't do itself any favours. Overall you are left feeling disappointed as the build up promises much more than what is delivered.

This film got absolutely slated on its release but I thought it was quite good! A guilty pleasure of mine. Better than Mission to Mars anyway.

Didn't like how it promoted the biggest hunk of bull ever in the form of evolution, but it was an enjoyable enough film. Saw it in the theater with my eldest brother and daddy.

    Review
From the very beginning, the script struggles with killing everybody off in a not too incredible manner in order for our heroes (who happen to be in love with each other) to return safe and merry. The actual point of the mission is fumbled up in some vague attempt striving towards action and can only be picked up if you're wearing magnifying glasses. Overall it's a pretty lame movie and if you're not into the whole Sci-fi genre with octagonal doors opening with a Star Trek inspired pssht sound, forget this one.

For us Sci-fi fans, it's worth the time; perhaps not the money?

I'm just glad i didn't bother watching that other film about mars that was around those days. Carrie-Anne Moss looked do-able.

It's ok. Not a great movie but worth the watch if you are into scifi. Way better than Mission to Mars....

Red Planet isn't as bad as the year's first abysmal Martian movie, Mission to Mars, but it's pretty close.
