Reporter Angela (Manuela Velasco) and her trusty cameraman Pablo are following a local fire crew for a segment of their reality television series "When You're Asleep" when the firefighters receive a distress call from a nearby apartment building. An elderly woman has become locked in her apartment; a routine call by any account. The police are already on the scene, so now it's up to firemen Manu (Ferran Terraza) and Alex (David Vert) to break down the door and ensure that no harm has come to her. Upon arriving at the building, everything appears normal. But the calm atmosphere at the moment betrays the horrors that begin to unfold after the firemen break down the tenant's door and experience something that no one would believe had it not been captured on camera. Later, as the building is surrounded and quarantined, Pablo continues to roll tape to ensure that whatever the outcome of this terrifying situation may be, there will be some evidence to ensure that the truth gets out. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A fun, inventive, and jumpy found-footage horror film that has it's share of thrills, especially in the final act. The acting for the most part is pretty good & I like that they don't make you wait too long before diving into the madness. And while I saw most gags coming from a m... read moreile away, there were still a couple of instances where I was genuinely shocked. The sound designed really augmented the horror of these moments and some scenes were delightfully disorienting because of it.
Unfortunately, the film spends way too much time trying to explain the phenomena and not enough time on creating a foreboding atmosphere. Also, while I understand that the filmmakers have to establish good reasons for having the camera rolling at times when the cameraman should be fleeing in terror, if I had to hear the protagonist say "We have to record this!" one more time, I was going to throw myself down a stairwell.
A bit over-hyped I must say, but overall an entertaining thriller.

I'm gonna give [Rec] more credit then the american counterpart, "Quarantine". Though they're carbon copies, [Rec]'s acting is far more superior. Turn off the lights, crank the sound up, and be prepared to jump. I was exhausted after watching this.

I kicked myself for waiting so long to watch this film, when it first came out I was just not in the mood for yet another infection/zombie type movie and with the whole handheld mockumentary style approach... but this turned out to be a damn good flick!! It's a real nail-biter at... read more times and does achieve a level of realism which made it all the more horrifying. Not as gory as I was expecting it to be though but the film is strong enough without it. The shakey-cam stuff did get a little too much at points, especially when going up and down the stairs in the building. Well worth a watch though, great effort by the Spanish cast and crew and they provide an intense experience with one of the scariest finales in recent years.

A TV crew follows firemen into an apartment building on a routine rescue call, but soon find themselves trapped inside the building where the residents have contracted a virus that causes them to turn homicidal. It's basically a mashup of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE BLAIR W... read moreITCH PROJECT, and although it's not very original, it is about as much scary fun as you could hope for from the combination.

Made in 2007 on an equivalent budget to 1.9 million U.S. dollars (and remade a year later as QUARANTINE with a budget of over 10 million more), [REC] is an enjoyable Spanish B-movie. It is chilling, thrilling, and simply to the point, even with a running time of less than an hou... read morer and twenty minutes.

The film uses the newly popular "found footage" sub-genre to follow a late-night television reporter in Barcelona, Spain. She and her cameraman must suddenly leave for the night to cover a shift at a local fire department. The fire station receives a phone call from an elderly woman trapped inside her house, and when they go to rescue her, the first thing they hear is a barrage of bloodcurdling shrieks. From then on, their night is bound to be full of chaos, horror, and nightmares that will stay with them forever.

If you are one of the many people who saw the 2008 remake QUARANTINE, loved it, and have yet to see [REC], you are in for quite a pleasant surprise. I rarely find films scary enough to honestly admit that I was truly scared; and I sadly cannot admit being even remotely afraid with this film. On the other hand, it is intriguing from the very first five minutes; it finds easy ways to freak one out and make one jump; and it is hard to even press pause on.

All in all, [REC] is not perfect. But it is a great horror film, and it is worth watching once or twice. Maybe not for the squeamish, I'll warn them. But the rest of you that aren't, don't miss out!

The absolute best and scariest horror film of the 21st century. One of the most intense film experiences of all time and the beginning of an intriguing, mind-bending franchise.

Now this good spanish movie directed by Balagueró. Good shots, claustrophobic and good score. Good choice for the weekend.

The spanish masterpiece of a horror film. Keeps you on the edge of your seat and delivers terrifying chills. Not as good as Quarantine though.

I'm not usually very keen on zombie films, but I loved this. I like mockumentary style horror in general, and this was one of the most realistic uses of it in my opinion. It takes a while to build up momentum, but I think the payoff is worth it.
