A very dark look at the culture of Algeria during a time of great upheaval and seemingly random violence that this viewer found hard to understand. Rachida, played by the hauntingly beautiful Ibtissem Djouadi, is traumatized by an attack in her hometown of Algiers and flees to a ... read moresmall country village for refuge, with her mother. But even there, the threat of violence plagues her every move. An excellent look at the reality of life in a virtual war zone, but one in which one's enemies are not clearly delineated. There is something illogical to western minds about a culture that views kidnapping and rape as the fault of the victim, that this viewer found infuriating. But the Algerian scenery was austerely beautiful, the tension was steadily maintained, and the script, while confusing at times, moved the story inexorably forward. Courage is the ability to go on when faced with terrifying circumstances and, in that, Rachida shows remarkable courage. Ultimately, the film became a testament to hope in the face of terror.

Shows us ignorant westernerss another side of Islamic life: the majority just want to live in peace. Rachida is a young, pretty schoolteacher targeted by terrorists in her native Algeria. Her crime? Being too western.
