The rest of the guests are merely putting in time; they're really just waiting for their aunts to kick the bucket, leaving them amply endowed via their respective inheritances. But, the nephew sends a party gift that turns the scene into a frolic of the macabre: the aunts turn cannibal and eat up all their guests! This film's definitely not for the squeamish. ~ Rovi

Just because this film bears a typically Troma-like title, and features the Troma logo on the packaging, don't make the mistake of thinking it is a Troma production?because it isn't.

It is, in fact, a low-budget Belgian film that was simply picked up for distribution by the stud... read moreio, and, as far as I am concerned, it is much more enjoyable than the majority of Lloyd Kaufman's own B-movie output.

In this delightfully silly and very gory romp, a group of greedy relatives gather together at the mansion of their two elderly aunts, in order to attend their birthday celebrations (and hopefully worm their way into their aunts' wills). However, when the old women open a surprise birthday present (sent by the black sheep of the family?a practitioner of the black arts), they become possessed, transform into vicious, drooling, bloodthirsty monsters, and proceed to tear their party guests limb from limb.

If you're a fan of visceral OTT slapstick horror?particularly Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy (which this film is obviously heavily influenced by) or the early work of Peter Jackson (whose similarly daft Bad Taste came out the same year)?then Rabid Grannies should be right up your alley. Director Emmanuel Kervyn spends the first thirty minutes introducing us to his raft of absurdly unlikeable characters (none of whom really deserve to survive 'til the end credits), and the next sixty dismembering them in as many inventive and silly ways as possible. It might not be Oscar winning material, but it's a whole heap of fun!

Considering the limited budget, the juicy effects on display are pretty damn good, and the film sure doesn't hold back with the nastiness: one man has his limbs hacked off, before being impaled (between the legs) on a pike; a fat guy gets stuck trying to escape, and has his ass eaten; and even a little girl gets reduced to spare parts by the demonic old dears!

Extremely silly and hilariously bad euro trash.

Troma saw fit to release an R-rated "directtor's cut" DVD of this film that carries a notorious "super gory" reputation. So, after a major search to obtain an uncut, import version, there is a bit of a disappointment to be had. 2 minutes of gore were spliced from the R version, a... read morend yes, they are 2 pretty bloody minutes. But, I'm not sure it makes up for the desperate lack of a substantial story to cary the film through it's 92 minutes. A plethora of guests show up to the Grannies' birthday party and an univited, satanic uncle gives a gift to the two which turns them into murderous monsters that spend the rest of the film hunting the guests down and killing them in bizarre ways. One must remember this was 1989, and the gore is way over the top for that era. Still, there is far too much wandering and aimless dialogue that makes this sucker a bit of a slow burn with a lackluster payoff. Granted, the uncut version is better than the R, but I'm not sure the moments of gore really fix the problems with this film. The deleted scenes include a particularly disturbing moment of cannibalism of a little girl which was no doubt a complete taboo in 1989. Still, despiite all of the complaints, this was a very ambitious low budget undertaking that deserves at least a legitimate director's cut release by somebody - I just shouldn't of tried so hard to obtain a copy of the import.

What can I say about Rabid Grannies? First of all they aren't grannies, they're aunties. Second, the dubbing is so bad that it's great. And third, it's a campy bloodbath with plenty of tasteless deaths. It's about a pair of rich old biddies and they're obnoxious relatives who ... read moreall arrive at their old mansion for a birthday celebration. A present from their estranged satanist nephew turns the old ladies into bloodthirsty demons who then go on a rampage. Sure, the plot isn't original in the least, but the energy and the tasteless carnage more than make up for it. The American version is chopped of a lot of it's more gruesome scenes, but there's still plenty of mayhem left over, plus you can find unedited versions online, if you're interested (and if you're into splatter then you probably are).

This started out looking for all intents and purposes, to be a dry British mystery. Dull at first, and then an orgy of hilarious violence and good gruesome makeup effects. Normally, the Troma full feature films bore me. Nevertheless his parodies, while unimportant, are reason... read moreably on target. I give this one two and half stars because although they played a good joke on the audience, it was slow going for the first half . Also, they partly spoiled what could have been a better trick on the public with the movie's title, and by putting the Troma name in the opening credits. With a bit more cleverness, this could have been, and almost was, a "shaggy dog story" for the horror genre.
