Margot is an heiress to the throne during the late 16th century reign of the neurotic, hypochondriac King Charles IX (Jean-Hugues Anglade), a time when Protestants and Catholics are vying for political control of France. Catherine decides to make an overture of good will by offering up Margot in marriage to prominent Protestant Huguenot Henri of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil), although she also schemes to bring about the notorious St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572, when tens of thousands of Protestants are slaughtered. The marriage goes forward but Margot doesn't love Henri and takes a lover, the soldier La Mole (Vincent Perez), also a Protestant from a well-to-do family. Murders by poisoning follow, as court intrigues multiply and Catherine's villainous plotting to place her son Anjou (Pascal Greggory) on the throne threatens the lives of La Mole, Margot and Henri. The American release version was cut to 145 minutes. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

This film should be considered a classic, but instead, I'm afraid, it's considered completely underwatched, underappreciated, and underrated, and it's deserving of so much more!
  • February 11, 2009
Historical drama of epic proportions, sumptuous yet gritty, held together by fine performances from Isabelle Adjani, maidenly, distant, yet passionate and Virna Lisi as the villainous Catherine de Medici. Labyrinthine yet compellingly flamboyant.

I liked this because I've been to France, to the chateau of Amboise, where the Catholics hung the Protestants from the gargoyles. This story takes place during all of that. A link to history. That's my kind of movie, even though it's not real fun.

Filled with thrills and excitement, this film re-enacts a time in history when fueds and wars were the thing of each day. Vincent Perez and Isabell Adjani are beautiful to look at and their romance is hot.

Weird....Perez was hot. That chick was gorgeous, but...no.
I thought that her brother the king was far more interesting than she was. And even though I love Vincent Perez, he just seemed rather simple and not really important. Other than to look good.

Beautiful, graphic, intense, passionate... French. Margot's transformation was exhilarating to watch.
  • June 27, 2007
It is sweet... and kinda sad. I guess it is pretty historically accurate besides maybe the whole in love with a poor man thing.
  • June 19, 2007
This is one of those foreign films that people have to see at bleast once. The story is slightly tedious as are the subtitles, but this movie just goes to prove that Vincent Perez is a star no matter what country or language he's tackling!!!
  • June 10, 2007
OK, it's a french film w/ subtitles but it's an awesome period piece w/ fantastic acting. It's romatinc, adventurous and not, I repeat, NOT HOLLYWOOD at all!
  • February 5, 2007
One of the greatest movies of all time, based on Alexandre Dumas best novel. Isabella adjani is mesmeriziing to watch, and the music score is chilling.

Lavish and disturbing, if somewhat cold. Adjani is typically solid.
