Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Matty Ferrigno, Franco Columbu, Mike Katz ... see more see more... , Serge Nubret , Roger Callard , Victoria Ferrigno

Arnold Schwarzenegger gained his first real notoriety outside body-building circles with this documentary about a group of men training for the Mr. Olympia contest. Arnold had already won the title si... read more read more...x times before, and was training for his seventh victory before retiring to fully pursue his acting career (which began to catch fire with his likable turn in Stay Hungry, released the same year) when this was shot. Here he displays an easy charm and wicked sense of humor as he plays mind games with his competitors and explains how getting pumped up for competition always reminded him of sex (which might explain why he seems so cheerful). And what is Arnold smoking in his dressing room after the contest? Future Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno is also on hand, and his fierce determination as he goes through a brutal weight lifting regimen shouting "Arnold! Arnold!" speaks both to his own desire to win and how strong a presence Schwarzenegger was in body-building at the time. You don't have to be a body building fan to enjoy Pumping Iron, though Arnold is the one contestant who shows obvious star quality. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Docu-drama about bodybuilders featuring a very young arnie. Sound entertaining? Thought not...
  • June 15, 2010
Part documentary, part mockumentary the film manags to both portray the (then) underground bodybuilding culture of the 1970s and slyly mock it.

Smarter than it is given credit for, though that is hardly saying much.

Arnold is, surprisingly, not much of a stickler for form...

Decent doc. Arnie smokes a joint in the end.

Got this DVD as a gift and it was sitting on a shelf for some time after I finally got around to watch it. It turned out a lot more entertaining than I expected! The film focuses more on behind the scenes rather than the actual competition, and the filmmakers goosed up the story ... read morequite a bit to make it an interesting watch, not just for fitness junkies but for regular folks. The extras are excellent and in some ways are even more interesting than the documentary itself, as it's revealed that much of the drama portrayed in the movie was "just for the camera". So I guess this makes it more of a "mokumentary" rather than a legitimate documentary, but an interesting watch nonetheless, especially if you're a fan of Arnold (technically speaking, this is his first movie).

Pumping Iron is a piece of nostalgia due to its leading subject, Arnold Schwarzenegger. This entertaining look at professional bodybuilding captures Arnold in his last year competing, just on the cusp of becoming a movie star. I lift...Arnold, Nubret and Franco at their best...Notice the great shapes and tight midsections they had back then (The "V" shape), unlike most of todays pro-bodybuilders (The "X" shape). The 25th SE has some great outtakes and a reunion scene not to be missed, especially when A... read morernold sees how big Lou still is!. Anyone who watches how hard these guys hit the weights puts the lie to the haters out there that try to claim it's all about AAS(steroids), which were legal back then anyway, and only taken in small amounts to hold on to hard-earned muscle while dieting off stubborn bodyfat. The fact is that most people are woefully ignorant at what professional bodybuilders do and how hard the diet and exercise is. Most are too cowardly to deal with the pain and too soft to deal with such strict eating patterns, and therefore reflexively talk smack and put-down those who forge themselves by the iron discipline they realize they do not have. Seeing these guys in action = Inspiring! I've got my protein shake ready and am on the way to the weight room now!...

Just a documentary on Arnie preparing for the Mr. Olympia where he beat Lou Ferrigno. Lots of weightlifting. Lots of broken English.

Arnold's first film ever, this dramamentary shows that his career was no fluke he was a star from the begining

Arnolds days before movies and politics, Franco Culumbo is awesome when he lifts up the front end of a car without a sweat!

Its in-your-face images of the bodybuilding subculture's well-oiled narcissism both startled and fascinated viewers, making for an unlikely boxoffice hit.
