Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has a code of honor which he will not violate, even when his life depends on it. Paradoxically, his code of honor gives him the backbone to survive as a military special ... read more read more...forces operative when he is sent on a covert mission to rescue another group which was sent in to assist some nefarious U.S. government plan in a Latin American country. Once there, he encounters an old army buddy (Carl Weathers) who has gotten too deep in the CIA's good graces for Dutch's comfort. When he and his team go into the jungle to rescue the others, they get involved in a pitched battle with local guerillas, but they are more than capable of besting these vicious fighters. However, not long after that, they encounter signs that the equally capable men they were sent to rescue were all killed unawares and in an unusually gruesome fashion. Given their training, it should have been impossible for anyone to best all of these commando warriors. Soon, the men from Dutch's own team get picked off one by one, as they grow aware that they are up against something uncanny, not of this world, something that is hunting them for sport. Why? Because their skills make them worthy opponents for the perfectly camouflaged Predator. This carefully paced action movie was given poor reviews by many movie critics, but was sufficiently satisfying for its (largely male) audiences that a successful sequel (Predator 2) was released in 1990. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Arnold Schwarzenegger and his crack special forces unit are sent into the South American jungle to rescue the occupants of a downed helicopter, only to find themselves the target of an unseen adversary who starts to pick them off one by one. Arnie was at a crossroads when he made... read more this film; up until this point he was known as the Terminator, but let's face it, playing a robot isn't usually the stepping stone to international superstardom. The rest of his CV consisted of films like Raw Deal, Commando and Red Sonja. Not exactly the stuff of legend. It can be argued that Predator was the film that set him on his way to becoming Governor Schwarzenegger rather Steven Seagal II. It's a perfect blend of gung ho action, tongue in cheek macho posturing and sci-fi invention. The first part of the film is actually typical of early Arnie, full of the usual 80s suspects such as Bill Duke, Sonny Landham and fellow Governor Jesse Ventura who were all stalwarts of the bone headed action movies of the time. It contains amusingly dumb lines ("I ain't got time to bleed!") and corny male bonding but it's just the right side of post modern. But what elevated it above the crowd was most definitely the alien. The concept of a monster movie where the monster actually has a mind of its own and the technology to match, and hunts human beings for sport rather than lunch is brilliant! The cloaking device also meant that it could dispense with the cliched dark corridors and stalk our heroes in broad daylight without being seen. It still could've tanked in the wrong hands, but John McTiernan always had a flair for unpretentious action flicks, and his slick, energetic direction sets the mayhem off perfectly. All we need now is Apollo Creed to be elected President and we can thank Predator for most of the American political system as we know it.

It have shamefully stale acting but the characters in it are extremly likable. Schwarzenneger can't act but, he sure can fight an alien that isn't even that scary in the same environment for almost 2 hou... read morers and maintain action packed thrills. The premise isn't anything we haven't seen before and it's certainly not deserving of it's reputation, but Predator is the typical action flick with explosions galore that isn't anything less than a testosterone thrilled rollercoaster. It passed the time pretty well and was certainly not boring. For this I will say, it was better than Alien. Predator is not so bad it's good. It's so bad it's brilliant.

This may seem like a typical lunkheaded 80s action movie, and in a lot of ways, it is, but it really isn't. Yeah, there's tons of testosterone, and lots of guys who really can't act, but make up for it by having huge muscles, grunting, and acting tough, but what sets this apart a... read morere a couple of things, mainly the concept, and the creature. The concept is basically a sci-fi version of "The Most Dangrous Game", but involving lots of humans, a great isolated setting, and one of the freakiest and deadliest cinematic creatures ever created. It's also a lot more violent and bloody than "The Most Dangerous Game".

Directed by John McTiernan, what looks like (and what could have been) a cheesy forgettable shoot-em-up turns into an energetic, suspenseful and intense struggle for survival. The Predator is smart, dangerous, has an awesome array of neato weapons, and, coolest (and scariest part of all): he's got a wicked look to him, sorta coming across as Satan mixed with Bob Marley. He looks cool with the mask on, but underneath it: oh shit man, that's just freaky!

The cast is fun to watch, as there are several notable names, even if a lot of them just portray forgettable cookie-cutter stereptypes. This isn't the type of movie where one comes in expecting Shakespeare or something. It doesn't have the moody intensity of Alien, or the masterful direction of Aliens, but Predator is great nonetheless, even if it is cheesier.

I mostly like John McTiernan (the man did make Die Hard after all), but I gotta say, I kind of wish I could justify giving this the extra half star it deserves, but I can't. Still though, this movie rocks.

A little too slow, and a bit long for how slow this movie is, included with some plot holes that never get clogged, and some rather vague variety of music, nothing less, this isn't a perfect movie. We all know Arnie has been in some rough movies, too, but he is also in some great... read more, unforgettable ones as well. This is only a bit more leading to the great side. I liked the ending, and some of the scenes (my favorite is when that man saw the guy with the mini-gun get toasted, and freaks out... then when he runs out of ammo, he grabs the mini-gun and unleashes EVERY SINGLE ROUND into the forest, with everyone else doing the same thing). This movie is good, but not very good or even a bit over good. It's just GOOD. Nothing else.

The predator is the greatest alien created, Stan Winston is a genius, the best 80's, adrenaline, testosterone, muscle filled action man flick ever with one of the best character actor line ups since 'Con Air' plus the effects still look better than most modern films today!

It was an alright movie, me personnally didnt think anything special about it.
It is action packed, with a twist and i enjoyed the character of the predator i like the concept, but i cant get over Arnold, hes not my favourite actor and so its hard to overlook him as the lead to ... read moretry and enjoy this movie.
The storyline is okay but i cant help comparing it to the Alien movies that its just the same story just recycled and centreing around this intense Creature that is creepy. For that i give the creature itself three stars but the story just seems the very same to me!

good for watching a bunch of muscled commandos get killed by a scary monster... and then seeing a Barry Bonds look-alike get his steroid-pumped arm blown off.
  • July 5, 2011
Another scifi-horror. So original and with all those kick ass soldiers you never expect that something is really there to hunt them and succeed. Predator is a great character with thermal vision, cloacking device and years of experience. But he never met Dutch before.
