R&B star Janet Jackson made an impressive film debut in Poetic Justice as Justice, a hairdresser at a small salon in South Central Los Angeles. Hired to work at a hair stylists' event in Oakland, Justice is stranded when her car breaks down, until she remembers that her friend Ieasha (Regina King) was going to hop a ride down to Oakland with her boyfriend Chicago (Joe Torry), a postal worker who is heading there with a truck full of mail. Justice tags along to discover that Chicago's driving partner is Lucky (Tupac Shakur), the postman who delivers mail to her shop and keeps asking her out. Ieasha and Chicago have to deal with their own rocky relationship while Justice has to decide if she's ready for a new love -- and if Lucky is the man she's waiting for. Along with strong work from Jackson, Poetic Justice features a surprising turn from Shakur, whose nuanced performance as Lucky is in strong contrast to his "Thug Life" public persona. Justice's poems were written by Maya Angelou, who also appears in a small role. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

an engaging movie with a messed up ending. one forgets how good shakur was as an actor until you realize that he was a huge chunk of the good films of this genre in the early 90's.

Not one of Singleton's best, but the story was ok. The actors/singers placed to play the lead characters were a bit annoying, but Regina King was the best whom always get's into her role, and stole the show from the two main characters. Mayo Angelou's poems are great, which is qu... read moreoted by Janet Jackson in this ok movie. I liked it and it was amusing, but they just did not bring out the roles as they should have.

After the murder of her boyfriend Markell (Q-Tip), Justice (Janet Jackson) goes into a deep depression. She spends her time writing poetry and working at a hair salon in South Central, Los Angeles. She soon meets Lucky (Tupac Shakur), a post office employee, when he delivers mail... read more into her salon. Sparks don't fly instantly, until they meet again on a "run" that has Lucky and his friend Chicago (Joe Torry), delivering packages to another city. Poetic Justice is one poem after another, bringing the script into full view for the audience. You can't help but get sucked into the characters and the dilemma's they're facing throughout their journey. Director John Singleton know's how to direct and this film shines with talent and artistic style. Tupac Shakur is a powerful performer, taking Poetic Justice as his own and running with it. Janet Jackson has a voice you wish would never stop expressing ideas. This is the type of urban drama we need to see more of.

I saw this film after becoming addicted to 'Boyz n the hood and 'Higher learning', I think John Singleton is one of the greatest filmmakers working today and Poetic Justice is a great example of a truly dedicated and talented filmmaker. The story starts off with Justice (played b... read morerilliantly by Janet Jackson, what a surprise)who witnesses the slaying of her boyfriend at a movie, justice becomes very depressed with life and feels nothing but loneliness. She expresses this by writing poems in a notebook to reveal her pain for her lost love and for the pain of living in America's South central l.a district. Lucky (again played greatly by Tupac Shakur in i feel his most personal and greatest role from 'Juice' right up to 'Gang Related')is a postman with nothing to look forward for in his life except to look after his daughter and a dream of rapping his pain for the hood. Together they go on a road trip with two other friends and learn on how to live again and to find their way in life. The performances are great, Singletons direction is wonderful. If your a fan of other 'hood' movies than this you might find a little different from the others. But nonetheless a deep hearted gem.

I had the pleasure of seeing Poetic Justice when I was much younger and it still has the same impact on me emotionally back then as it does now. Next to Juice, this has to be one of Tupac Shakur's best performances. And, Janet Jackson, this too has to be one of her best performan... read moreces. Poetic Justice has to be one of the best dramas I have ever seen. Tupac (Lucky) is an agitated young postal worker aspiring to be a music artist. He sets out on a road trip to fulfill his dream when he becomes lovestruck over a rebellious young female named Justice (Janet Jackson). This story, no matter your background will humor you in the least, and move you emotionally.

The last of Tupac's movies I hadn't seen, but he was as spectacular as usual. Janet Jackson held her own, but I think the women in this movie spent half the time brushing their braids behind their head. Predictable story but they take a few stops along the way to keep it interest... read moreing. RIP Tupac.

The two leads are raw but completely intriguing, and Poetic Justice offers a slice of the urban story that we generally don't get to see. Full Review

A quiet, personal story that should have been louder, bolder.
