This classic blend of science-fiction and horror belies its extremely low budget with buckets of atmosphere and some genuinely creepy setpieces. What they don't know is that the planet was home to a race of vampiric aliens, who possess their minds, eventually rising from their strange, misty graves to seek human blood. Legendary director Mario Bava once again proves himself a master at atmospheric composition, using color, sound, and minimalistic sets in original and unnerving ways. Barry Sullivan stars with Angel Aranda and Brazilian actress Norma Bengell. The American version, running several minutes shorter than the original, was put together by Ib Melchior (The Angry Red Planet). ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

A very smartly executed B-movie that fuses space opera with Universal-style horror atmosphere. Director Mario Bava injects a gloomy and foggy atmosphere that would come to influence "Alien" years later. There is a scene that involves people digging themselves out of their grave... read mores that is made terrifying by the chilling music score and gritty cinematography. The marvelous cinematography makes even the most basic sets look magnificent and more lavish than what they really are. The spaceship sets are a bit cheesy and some of the characters are given only bare-minimum development outside of their archetypes, but the film is so much fun to watch that these problems only become minor. Although it does perplex me why this was given the title "Planet of the Vampires" in America considering that there are no vampires in the movie.

An atmospheric blend of space opera and horror elements that fits well into Mario Bava's list. Filled with inventive futuristic sets and chic black leather spacemen suits, its' gloomy style most likely influenced ALIEN some 15 years later. As John Carpenter admitted Bava's influ... read moreence on Halloween, then the notion this film influenced his take on The Thing is hard to resist, especially in contemplating the dark conclusion.

Word of warning, there actually aren't any Vampires in this film. If you are looking for Vampires, you will be disappointed when you find none. Perhaps, Planet of the Zombies, or Planet Without Vampires would have been a more appropriate title. Either way, this film is a lot of fun, there just aren't any Vampires.

At first, I was extremely disappointed by the fact that this movie doesn't have any vampires in it, but then I realized that that was the American title, the Italian title says Terror in Space or something, which makes more sense. Other than that, I loved the story in this movie... read more, it's fantastic. Of course, this is a low budget sci-fi movie from the 60s, but it's pretty cool and worth watching.

Investigating the source of an extraterrestrial radio transmission, an exploration team touches down on a desolate planet. There they discover an alien spacecraft, the skeletal remains of her long dead crew and a malevolent parasite in search of a host. Sound familiar? It should ... read moredo because all of the above was ripped off by Ridley Scott's Alien, roughly fifteen years after this movie came out. With a miniscule budget, some bad acting, terrible dialogue and silly costumes, Planet of the Vampires ought to be a prime slice of Sixties cheese, enjoyable for all the wrong reasons. What saves the film is Mario Bava's mastery of atmosphere and his genius for no-budget special effects. This isn't quite Bava at his best but it's still colourful, creepy and a lot of fun. Forget the title though; the baddies here are not vampires, they're more like zombies or bodysnatchers, depending on whether their victims are still alive or already dead!

    Bava in the "21st Century"!

Everything that (those of us who live Bava) expect from one of his films: creepy atmosphere, great sets, amazing costumes and damsels in distress!

Bava's take on "the future" is both sexy and groovy. And full of space "Vampires"!

As with most Bava films there isn't much of a plot. This isn't really of those films. But also with most Bava films you can't bring yourself to care because they look so incredible. The sets, the lighting, the camera tricks, the atmosphere all hypnotize beautifully. Planet of the... read more Vampires has a bit more going on upstairs right up to the very end. And to Bava's credit, Ridley Scott had to be ripping the scouting scene in Alien off from this movie. Just a testament to Bava's lush style. And after more viewings, yeah, the plot relies more on creepiness, suspense and sparsness than anything and Bava's direction is the real star.

I'm not quite as bat shit crazy about this movie as everyone else is(I'm not a HUGE sci-fi fan), but this movie is a must for any fans of Bava or Sci-Fi

With a title like Planet of the Vampires how could I not love this midnite classic from Mario Bava. A crew of space explorers, in nifty leather outfits, arrive on a mysterious, fog filled planet and members of the crew begin to act strangely. What follows is a fight to the death ... read morefor the very future of the human race. The vampires of the title aren't really vampires at all but rather body snatchers who exist as a particle (or something like that) until they posses a human host/body. The ending was pure dopeness. Not to be missed by those who go for this kinda thing (like me!)

The first movie I ever saw with an anti-Hollywood ending.
  • August 28, 2009
For an Italian made space opera of that time; this particular b-movie was pretty good. But then I have always loved b-movies, and I was only about nine or ten years old when I saw it. I remember while walking home from the theater with several friends, we acted out several scenes... read more from the film over and over again.

The special effects were pretty typical of that time period, but the use of fog did lend it an eerie quality that made it the kind of movie that was right up a young boys alley.

The ending, which today would be considered cliché, was almost scary to a kid. Campy by today?s standards, but isn't that what b-movies are all about.

If you can find it showing late some night, or in a DVD budget bin, check it out.
