This tech-world biopic traces the fortunes of personal-computer companies Apple and Microsoft from their obscure dorm-room and backyard origins to their very public battle for corporate supremacy. Wri... read more read more...ter/director Martyn Burke follows the parallel lives of Microsoft founder Bill Gates (Anthony Michael Hall) and Apple co-founders Steve Jobs (Noah Wyle) and Steve Wozniak (Joey Slotnick) -- the former a crafty Harvard dropout, the latter a pair of hippies with jobs at Hewlett-Packard and a yen to sell miniature versions of corporate mainframes to small businesses and at-home enthusiasts. Much like the personal-computer industry itself, the action starts with Apple then gradually shifts to Microsoft. The former plot thread recounts how Jobs and Wozniak "borrowed" key concepts from a Xerox computer lab, eked out their success as countercultural businessmen, and finally fell out with one another over the pressure of success. The latter thread focuses on the way Gates learned from, then surpassed, the brains behind Apple and turned his company into the global powerhouse that it is today. Based on Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine's Fire in the Valley: The Making of the Personal Computer, the film actually focuses only on that book's final chapters. Produced for cable channel TNT, Pirates of Silicon Valley debuted June 18, 1999. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

I enjoyed the performances by the two main actors but the fake documentary left a little to be desired. I would have liked a more straight forward telling of the story in the traditional movie of the week way.

In the post Social Network years, it's interesting to go back on films that people have said remind them of the story. This was recommended to me by a friend, and after much hunting, I found a copy. It's the interesting story of the rise to success of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, a... read morend both actors portraying the roles do such a great job, specifically Anthony Michael Hall as Bill Gates, quiet and reserved, a perfect match. The documentary style talking heads don't quite work sometimes, it feels like a poor plot device to move us along swiftly, and Noah Wyle does sometimes go over the top with his acting. Nonetheless it's an interesting release which, if you can find it, is a worthwhile watch.

Decent TV movie about the invention of the home personal computer, and the battle between Apple and Microsoft in the early days. Its fascinating, and well acted, especially for a TV movie.

Very entertaining and provocative, but as far as filmmaking goes... there is nothing to be desired. They could maybe remake this in the form of a The Social Network manner.

Nothing too special, nothing too disappointing. Performances were okay. Script could have had a much stronger ending, and a couple of scenes had me yawning, but it was decent. This really, truly is a made for TV film. For me, it was a made for youtube, chunked into 10 parts f... read moreilm.

Thank you Steve Jobs, for dropping acid in college, shaving cats, and making computers.

    Bill Gates can suck it.

Parts okay, parts Pretty good, a little weird but a pretty interesting story....loved the music. Did not know that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs got to the top by scheming and cheating....not too surprised.

This film somehow made Bill Gates seem more human.

Pretty decent movie about the development of the Apple and Microsoft companies along with the graphical user interface and personal computing in general. It is pretty fast paced but definitely interesting and worth a watch.
