Growing up in my household you gotta love good ole fashion campy horror movies. My parents are constantly renting movies like "Frankenfish" or "Eyes in the Woods". I always make fun of them, but I secretly love those type of movies too. Especially ones that go so over the top ... read moreit's insane like "Piranha 3-D"(I didn't watch this in 3d, but hopefully will get the 3d blu ray sometime). Long story short, this is about some prehistoric man eating piranhas that have come up from a lake, under the lake, to terrorize a city that is celebrating spring break. Lots and lots of blood, gore, nudity, and male anatomy parts being eating. This is not for the weak of heart or a person with high standing morals. Campy to the max, with good over the top performances to boot. Elizabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, and Richard Dreyfuss are all here and help make this movie that much more fun. Great movie for lots of laughs and moments of "holy crap!"

Piranha 3D is all kinds of stupid. Right from the opening sequence, the audience watches Richard Dreyfuss - yes, Richard Dreyfuss is in Piranha - reprise his roll from Jaws thirty years older. He may have been able to fight off a great white shark, but he's no match for a pack of... read more blood crazy piranhas as poor Hooper gets eaten alive. Then the film turns into a gleefully bright Playboy video as all kinds of young teens bare all at a spring break beach party right before the piranhas decide to attack them. Literally, this movie is all sex and gore.
But as the opening sequence shows, Piranha 3D is meant to be taken as big, dumb, stupid fun. It's completely tongue-in-cheek, and the more it revels in its sheer silliness, the more fun the audience has. They even got Christopher Lloyd to reprise his role as Doc from Back to the Future, playing a crazed marine biologist who tells the characters all they need to know about these types of piranhas.
As with all teen horror movies, sex and death go hand in hand. The hornier the teens, the greater their punishment and likely graphic death. And since everyone in this movie is pretty damn horny, guess how many people are going to get eaten. Of course, our main teenager leads are still relatively pure, so they will just be placed in life-threatening situations, but they won't fall victim.
Alexandre Aja directs, and Piranha 3D just may be the first movie of his that I actually enjoyed. He understands the film he wants to make and he really wants to pay homage to the exploitation horror films of the 1980s. He knows what works in those movies and he doesn't try to make a serious minded film here. This is Jaws gone wild and silly. However, just because this movie isn't to be taken seriously does not mean that it isn't well made. The photography is absolutely gorgeous. The scenery is given that "beach shine" where there isn't a cloud in the sky, the sun gleans off the actors' golden bodies, and the colours are lush and vibrant. The underwater footage is also absolutely incredible. Even the actors recite the B-movie dialogue in an A-list way.
Piranha 3D is definitely not for everyone. It has it's core audience and it's catering to the demands of only that core audience. But Aja and company know what they're doing and they do it with pride.

Firstly, I will gladly admit that I enjoy creature features. And a lot of people disliked a similar film called Snakes on a Plane which I thought was thrilling and claustrophobic. Piranha 3D is slightly better than it. Believe it or not, it's more sophisticated (even though its a... read more sexploitation film with deadly fish bent on tearing people to shreds). Overall it can be easily enjoyed by anyone who is a fan of gory horror, black comedy or total thrills. The comedy side to Piranha I think was inserted deliberately, as Snakes on a Plane was laughable rather than scary like it was intended. It also has an absolutely bitchin soundtrack and the stylish effects are amazing. Whether you see it in 3D or not, I am almost certain you will finish it feeling guilty pleasure happy.

When they say blood and boobs - they mean it!

Alright, let me be perfectly blunt and clear with this one. If you compare it to other films today, with story, character development, and sh*t that actually makes sense..it sucks, but it's not meant to be that. It's basically meant to be made in a cheesy 50's or 60's B-movie, and... read more it does a really good job of doing that. It pretty much has no story what-so-ever, (like any 50's or early 60's movie along the lines of campy action)but what it does have is gore, and campy humor(oh yeah, and lots of tit-shots) The basic premise is that Piranhas are attacking....that's about it. It makes no sense, and you can expect that from the entire movie. The other thing you can expect is the gore, in one particular scene a woman gets her face ripped off by a motorboat blade, the gore is awesome. The other thing this movie has going for it is the 3D effects, the movie is actually made FOR 3D, so it incorporates camera angles that actually COMPLIMENT the 3D, so you don't feel like you just paid ten dollars extra just to watch a bunch of blurry crap like those other awful, unnecessary 3D movies(by which I mean every freaking movie made today).Sure, many people may call this film "vulgar" and "immature", you know what I have to say to those people? Did you just forget how to have fun or something? Seriously, every single negative review about this movie can just be replaced with "nanannanananaaaaan", just bitching and moaning about the excessive gore and cheesy dialog without any story or substance to back it up. Oh really, because from a film called Piranha 3D, where the trailer shows Doc Brown ranting about a prehistoric species of Piranha, and a cliche, bad-ass black sheriff using a fucking auto-axe to cut hundreds of Piranhas in half would've had a beautifully crafted story and a very sentimental and emotionally satisfying ending. Get over yourselves guys. You're obviously not a very good movie critic if you can't figure out that the dialog is SUPPOSED to be cheesy, and it's SUPPOSED to be nothing but gore, and it's not SUPPOSED to make any sense at all, it's meant to be that way, it makes fun of itself. If you like story structure, interesting characters, and a well written script, go watch Forest Gump, because this movie has none of that; but if you want gore, crazy action, and campy humor, then look no further my friends!

Exploitation, pure and simple. This film was only made by the esteemed Dimension, to cultivate the already questionable art of spoof without the usual parameters of either being funny or scary. Yes, there is a lot of stock in producing films that make fun of, or in the case of th... read moreis film, mimic, bad horror movies. Still, this doesn't even begin to do that justice. Piranha is one long trek through the land of boobs, blood, and a really bad screenplay. Listening to the insanely grotesque dialogue and watching the utter monotony of Spring Break antics only irks me. I can't see any merit or hilarity, or just good old fashioned sexual advantage in any of this. There is an entire scene consisting of two naked women swimming around each other, and it's not explained. Oh sure, these kind of scenes would look pretty good in 3D (if you get a chance to watch in that format) but for all of us who aren't at an advantage to see this in the way it's intended, it comes off cheesy. Worse, it makes no sense, which can drive anyone crazy. I do give credit where it's due to the makeup on this movie. The victims of the attacks are all shown in very detailed, very gruesome ways, and though not entertaining per se, it is interesting and engrossing to say the least. Of course, the actual attacks are generated in really awfully amateur fashion. Plus, we're only given a snippet of this movie to deal with the buildup to something big. It holds a lot of detailed scenes, but at an hour and a half, it cuts off any climax it could have had and ends with a cliffhanger, only alienating the audience. Always good to see Elisabeth Shue and Adam Scott in films though, even when their roles are supportive like this venture.

I enjoyes Piranha 3D very much. It truly brings back the great tense cheesy monster movies that we know and love. It has naked chicks, and pathetic plot, and was cheesy, and thats all I wanted. I will admit the acting sucked too much, and it was maybe too cheesy. But Piranha ... read more3D brings us back tothe days of cheesy monster movies we love, even if it wasn't amazing.

Blood, gore and hot girls in bikinis! Indeed this has all the ingredients one would expect out of a B-movie. What I didn't anticipate though, was that it's actually pretty good. The special effects are first-rate and they sure didn't go cheap on the gore. In fact, it's got some o... read moref the most realistic-looking effects I've ever seen in a horror movie. Why I still don't give it higher than 3-star rating is due to the following issues: 1. Jerry O'Connell's overacting, 2. Christopher Lloyd and Richard Dreyfuss only getting a few minutes each of screen time. And 3. the bad dialogue. But then again, who watches these type of movies for the conversations between the characters? It's like saying you saw Baywatch for its rich and complex storylines.

Piranha 3D is more funny than disgusting, even when screen fills with half-nude swimmers, bobbing like human dumplings in a roiling vat of borscht. This isn't just sick, it's clas-sick! Full Review
