You should definitely give it a try if you're into short stories, animated movies, and like the Animatrix (which is also a collection of short animations with a shared theme). The last animation is my favorite.

Fear(s) of the Dark isn't the horror film I was hoping for. It's creepy, twisted and dark, but is also distant. It's really a portfolio of work collected by a number of talented animators. Each of the individual tales has a dreamlike quality, allowing the films to avoid any respo... read morensibility they may have to tell a story. The artistic skills on display can't be challenged in anyway, but so much more could have been achieved with the expansion of just one story. Certainly worth a look for some imaginative imagery.

I'm the first to admit that I'm both a sucker for short animation and for short horror anthologies. This strange black and white French film combines the best of both worlds. The stories varied in quality, my favorite being the last one about the man taking refuge in a darkened h... read moreouse. One of my favorite things about this film was how different each animated vignette looked, and each director made a short film that looked absolutely beautiful. I found the interludes of Nicole Garcia talking about her neuroses a little extraneous and tiresome, but it was really interesting to see what each director did with thier palette of black and white. I loved the character design of the Japanese story about the girl and the samuria ghost, and I liked the movement in the insect nightmare. The last short film was my favorite though, because it really embodied the title the best. The sparse light added so much to the mood, and made it seem especially alarming when it would illuminate something the main character couldn't see. What a work of art. I wish animation and horror overlapped much more often.

Definitely an interesting animation style and a pretty cool atmosphere is created, but it will leave you in the dark (no pun intended) about what the whole point was.

Includes more horror-comedy than solid horror (Which is a shame). Though at times the animation is skilled.

Cons. = Animation techniques were used to transfer the sense of fear. I was particularly thrilled with the last segment (B&W depiction of a man that was entrapped on a deserted house in a snowy day). The last dog was looking at a mirror and then killing their tyrant owner. I lik... read moree the idea of Narcissism on this scene and following story of a man that basically cause fear for himself by his own actions (reminded me of Blair Witch Project).

Easily one of the most unique and visually stunning films I have ever seen. Each of the 6 installments had something different and scary to offer. I honestly did not think that this would be scary before watching, but I can say that I was freaked out at many points throughout. Th... read moree main reason why I loved this film was for it's artistic and dark look. The visuals were perfect. I could see this being a favorite of mine after watching it another time or two.

I realy enjoyed this movie .. it is several graphic novals done in black and white... this movie feels like a realy crazy twilight zone on crack ... this movie is in french so beware if you hate subtitles ... but for the open minded this movie rocks

Yes, the Charles Burns segment (in which a teenage boy succumbs to a relationship he feels indifferent about, with horrifying results) is a must-see, but the rest of the film is just not interesting enough to sustain itself. These parts might have worked better independently, as... read more shorts, but taken together, they create a film that is a challenge to sit through. With the monotonous French narration and experimental style, this is one for the artsiest of the art house crowd.

Fear(s) of the Dark is an animated anthology that tells its stories with an inventiveness that's seldom scary but never less than mesmerizing.
