The tale , although well known, is moving and the character design is spectacular, as well as the music by the Philharmonic. There isn't a word of dialogue by the human characters, but their feelings and thoughts come through crystal clear through facial expressions, and in the... read more case of Peter, the boy's large expressive eyes.

Gone is the Disney fluff and replaced with not-too-dark humor perfect for both young and old.

Wasn't terribly impressed by this mediocre Fantasia-esque effort. The other nominated shorts were more original in story (Même les pigeons vont au paradis), music (Madame Tutli-Putli), animation (Moya lyubov), and overarching theme (I Met the Walrus).

A landmark short in stop motion animation history. This more than deserving Oscar winner is a true masterpiece of its art. The Sergei Prokofiev libretto has been adapted countless times but rarely has it been done so compellingly. The characters come to life marvelously and th... read moree wolf is indeed frightful. A must see short subject film if ever there was one.

An animated retelling set to Prokofiev's suite. Peter is a slight lad, solitary, locked out of the woods by his protective grandfather, his only friend a duck. In town, he's bullied. When a wolf menaces the duck - as well as grandfather's fat cat and an ill-flying bird that Peter... read more has befriended - Peter bravely tries to tree the wolf. Grandfather, the townspeople, and the hunters who have antagonized Peter figure in the dénouement. This new stop-motion animated version by BAFTA-winning Suzie Templeton goes back to the edginess of the original story. The human characters don't speak, not a word is uttered throughout the film but their feelings and thoughts come through with crystal clarity through facial expressions. Templeton's singular shot of a sad, abandoned duck, standing on the frozen lake after a long play session is particularly touching. That sets up the escalating fear when we watch Peter trapped behind the high fence as he watched the wolf kill the duck in a few rapid gulps.

Extremely marvelous stop-motion, based on the composition by Sergei Prokofiev about umm, a boy and a wolf. Very well-done.
