Adapted from Dennis Potter's landmark British TV miniseries and relocated to the United States during the Depression, Pennies from Heaven dramatizes how popular songs both shaped and reflected the tho... read more read more...ughts of people living through economic (and emotional) hardship. Arthur Parker (Steve Martin) is a sheet music salesman who believes that he can spot a hit a mile away and wants to open his own store. But he can't get a bank loan and his wife Joan (Jessica Harper), who has savings left to her by her father, refuses to give him the money. Also, while Arthur has a fierce sexual appetite, Joan generally refuses his advances. While on the road, Arthur meets Eileen (Bernadette Peters), a shy schoolteacher as desperate for affection as Arthur is hungry for sex. They begin an affair, which leads to tragedy for both. Punctuating the drama of Pennies from Heaven are elaborate musical numbers in which the characters lip-synch to popular songs of the day, which at once lift their hopes and reflect their fears. Arthur's buoyant tap number to "My Baby Said Yes" and Eileen's saucy rendition of "Love is Good for Anything That Ails You" are reflections of their needs for money and love, and their pas de deux on "Let's Face the Music and Dance" is at once an escape and an acknowledgement of their hopelessness. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

People trying to escape to a fantasy world where songs make up for the harsh reality they live in is a subject I find utterly appealing, even more if there is a lively, playful mastermind behind it to inject a good measure of black humour to the mix. Too bad Dennis Potter's amazi... read moreng writing wasn't adapted to the silver screen by an equally sharp mind. But I pass things like that because I love the period, Gordon Willis' lightning and the lovely tunes. Also, Christopher Walken shows what a great dancer he is.

As fun as the musical numbers are, there is some very dark drama in this movie. I liked how everyone lip-syncs to the actual songs recorded in the 1930s. Here Steve Martin shows what a good actor he is as well as a dancer. Christopher Walken strip-teaseling to "Lets Misbehave" th... read moreen telling Bernadette Peters "You'd better not be a tease . . . cause I'll cut your face" is a great scene. I can't speak to this being better than the original miniseries because I haven't seen it, but this film on its own is very good.

The most depressing musical of all time. Easy 5 stars.
I wonder if Lars Von Trier saw this?

Dec 2010 - This is a very interesting musical. The story is not that interesting but the style and how the music gets integrated into the movie makes it very thrilling. Steve Martin does a very good job and he clearly became a jerk in various parts of the movie.

This movie is probably one of the few that accurately depicted the zeitgeist of the depression. From it's hunger, to it's desperation, to it's fantasies this musical so amazingly brings it to life. I love that they draw on the photo and art images of the time (they reenact my fav... read moreorite painting "New York Movie" (1939) in one scene) and Martin and Peters really are just divine.

BTW, if you only want one reason to see this movie it's this: Christopher Walken has a brief role. And he's dancing on a bar top doing a striptease and it is probably five minutes of the best dancing in movie history. Apparently it caught Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly's eyes and wrote a letters to Walken telling him so.

Fascinating, gutsy, dark musical that combines a gritty story with difficult characters, and spectacular musical numbers. Not easy material to accept, but challenging, with superb cinematography by Gordon Willis.

this film is the closest thing to a noir musical out there. ross buffed a lot of the rough edges off his adaptation of the bbc tv series of the same name. but the visuals owe so much to the paintings of hopper as well as the noir films of the 40s that it deserves its place in a ... read morenoir listing. and by the way, it does what 'chicago' did twenty years hence.

One of my favorite movie musicals ever. Not as complex as the BBC mini-series it's based on (starring the best actor EVER, Bob Hoskins), but it stands up great on its own. It's unlike any musical I'd ever seen, none of the characters actually singing, but rather lip-synching ol... read mored standards from the Depression era. And the story is pretty damn bleak for a movie musical. The musical numbers are some of the best, most visually exciting this side of "Singin' in the Rain" and "Moulin Rouge!" You could tell Steve Martin was trying to break free from his "wild and crazy" persona on this one, playing a fairly unlikeable cad who you still somehow find yourself rooting for. Bernadette Peters is cute as a button, particularly in her "Love is Good for Anything" number, and Christopher Walken. . .oh Christopher Walken. His striptease routine is one of those rare screen gems that more people should see but haven't. This one belongs with modern musicals like "Dancer in the Dark" and "Once", taking the audience's expectations of what a musical is and turning it on its ear.

A different side of Steve Martin. This is the musical for people that don't normally like musicals. The attention spent on the period art direction is gorgeous. Plus it's the first glimpse we get of Christopher Walkens amazing dance moves.

O ótimo conceito deste musical torna-se ainda mais fascinante graças às belas coreografias, aos ricos figurinos, à impecável direção de arte e, é claro, à magnífica fotografia de Gordon Willis.
