A handful of men find themselves forced to deal with acts of brutal violence in an increasingly lawless Britain in this hard-hitting crime thriller from writer and director Nick Love. Sgt. Danny Bryan... read more read more...t (Sean Bean) comes home injured from a tour of duty in Iraq to find that things aren't what they once were -- a gang of thugs has moved into the neighborhood, and his wife is sleeping with another man. Angry Gene Dekker (Danny Dyer) is roughed up by toughs on the day he's to be married, and rather than head out to the church, he sets out to get revenge on the men who beat him. Terence Manning (Rob Fry), a gangster who has been one of the leaders of London's underworld, is currently on trial, with lawyer Cedric Munroe (Lennie James) heading the prosecution's legal team. Manning's men attack both Munroe and his wife, and persuade Munroe's bodyguard Walter (Bob Hoskins) not to intervene. In time, the men set out to even the score against those who wronged them, though their contempt for the law puts them outside the lines of conventional justice. Outlaw also stars Sean Harris and Rupert Friend. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

British film that basically brings to light what state the country is in these days, how law abiding citizens seem to be let down or failed by the system whilst criminals appear to roam free with little fear of severe punishment.

Its a sad fact that the film is pretty accurate w... read moreith the type violence and youth gang/hoodie culture that this country suffers and the plot behind a small group of men who become vigilantes against the crime is a very satisfying one. The cast is abit mismatched here for my liking really, Bean is perfect for the role with his butch South Yorkshire, manly, grizzled features and heavy accent but other members of the small gang are less effective and not as believeable despite the fact they are suppose to be weak. Dyer is a totally wrong choice in my opinion as he should be hosting something like 'Big Brother' or whatever, simply not good enough even for this small film.

In general the film is very engaging and keeps you stuck to the screen wanting to see the bad guys get battered, its this primal vengeance that most English people will feel when watching this film as we all know exactly what its like and what is going on in our city streets everyday and this film exposes and bleeds that fact. Problem is the film loses its stride as things progress more towards major drug dealers and then towards the end gets abit silly with out of hand gun battles against police. Its a shame because you really don't wanna see the good guys get involved against the police, you wanna see them kicking hoodie ass and getting away :)

Excellent Film with Sean Bean making the most of his tough guy image. Sean Harris also adds well as the semi psycho whose ending is interesting. A international host of stars in this one of which this movie did not show well in the US, only to our lose. Film is about a group of p... read moreeople who are wronged by the lawless system of England or just wronged by teenage gangs. So they take law in there own hands, which makes for a 5 star movie.

Self Justice or vengeance( if you prefer) ended up in Disaster. Great acting, but the plot could have been a tiny bit better. I have to say Sean Bean was Brilliant in his role.

Nick Love's most thought provoking film to date, not brilliantly executed but quite well directed all the same. Give the story to a more capable director who's less interested in violence and this could have been a much fairer and entertaining film. Well done to him all the same ... read morethough, this film does have balls!

This is a very good film, quite violent and gritty with a strong cast. Fed up with the soft treatment of criminals and thugs in England, a group forms to administer their own justice. A very relevant subject at the present time as a gang culture seems to be on the rise in England... read more. Although the films deals with getting back at those directly linked to the characters in the film, rather than random people. Everyone will have a view on this. Maybe it could have been done slightly better, they storyline wavers a little in the middle. However it will provoke a reaction from everyone.

Good acting and intentions are undermined by thin plotting and a senseless resolution that has nothing to say.

A great gritty British vengeance film, where vigilantes take a stand against the bullies in society.

Just when I thought Sean Bean was past his prime, he pulls off a part that suits him really well.

    Directed by: Nick Love.
Starring: Sean Bean, Danny Dyer, Lennie James, Bob Hoskins, Rupert Friend.

Right off the bat, this film wasn't going to have an agreeance from all audiences and it doesn't. The premise at hand is one that will always have a 50/... read more50 opinion, no matter what gets done...and Nick Love keeps this in mind, while never forgetting to entertain.

The story follows a group of British men, each with there own way of life. Each one carries an event that has made them question two simple sources, society and the law. Through the work of ex-war veteran Brian, a man who is a loose cannon, he helps the men learn to fight back. But when humanity is tested, question arise: Is taking the law into there own hands the right thing? Or could they simply be doing everything the law should be doing?

The film isn't going to win the hearts of a nation, nor is it overly the 'masterclass' of its kind, but what has been shown impressed me. Although a little unfocused for the first quarter, the film starts to gain momentum, building a considerable and acceptable amount of depth for each character, enough that we can feel for them and for what they are doing, whether that be right or wrong. It raises questions on the very real corruption in society and the law and leaves you thinking 'what would you do?'. Although that is a little clichéd for the way film has become today, Nick Love develops it in a very gripping fashion, manipulating the audience...which isn't a bad thing.

Behind the camera, Nick Love is brutal and real and has some excellent cinematography to back him up, but I couldn't help but also notice the attempt at adding more grittiness to the film by creating a certain hand held effect with the camera, but it comes across as amateurish when his button can't help but be stuck to the automatic zoom button when it should flow more.

The acting is respectable for the films intentions. I have always thought that Sean Bean can pull off more of a 'baddy' role and he shows potential here, by going back to his roots and delivering a rather stern and menacing performance. Bob Hoskins is brilliant in his small screen time and if you know his track record, you'll know what he is like here and Danny Dyer, although annoying in some of his dialogue delivery, does have it in him to pull off a convincing role.

The film is in no way perfect. It is a little unfocused for the first 20 minutes, trying to find its way on what it wants to say and the camera work tries to be gritty but comes away as amateurish, but once the film gains momentum, it works. Many say the ending ruins it...but depending on what side your on will determine your thoughts on it and the fact that Nick Love kept this in mind, is what I liked more about this film. A great film to debate about.

Some wonderful performances from a brilliant cast who do the most with a group of characetrs given the most basic of emotions and motivations to work from. Always entertaining but falling flat due to the films deluded sense of a higher purpose. It's basically a revenge flick that... read more attempts to tackle more current and disturbing issues. Although it's easy to get swept into the fantasy with this film, that is exactly what it is. A testorone filled dream of what many people would like to do, despite the implications. The ending turns this into a pretty poor western wannabe but the build up during the first half is enthralling. It wants to be an intellectual and hard hitting piece of cinema , but goes for entertainment instead.

Strong language and bone-crunching tear-ups won?t appeal to the faint-hearted ? but for fans of in-your-face action, this is the business.

Both the pic's power and its problems stem from Love deliberately taking no moral position nor offering any solutions; he gives his audience what it wants at a gut level and doesn't wimp out at the end. Full Review

The actors are all too good for this kind of stuff, but they do the business, while Sam McCurdy's sharp cinematography and Stuart Gazzard's slick editing keep it all moving swiftly.
