Ben Tyler (Joshua Jackson) has an unfulfilling job as a high school English teacher and a manuscript that's gathering dust after being rejected by every publisher in town. And while Ben is undeniably comfortable in his relationship with faithful fiancée Samantha (Liane Balaban), he can't help but feeling that there's something in their relationship that he has never truly confronted. Informed by his doctor that he is suffering from a highly malignant form of cancer and has only a 10% chance of survival if he begins treatment immediately, Ben rails against his fate by straddling a vintage motorcycle and embarking on a 4,000 kilometer journey from Toronto to Tofino, B.C., meeting a variety of people who help him understand what it truly means to be alive along the way. Later, while hiking in Banff, Ben becomes dangerously sick and desperately lost before an intense encounter with a woman named Tracey (Emm Gryner) convinces him once and for all that he isn't in love with Samantha. In the emotional aftermath of that encounter, Ben terminates his relationship with Tracey and makes a pledge to live a lifetime with each passing day. It isn't long before Ben's condition begins to deteriorate, however, and by the time he finally arrives at mile zero of the Trans-Canada highway, he's fresh out of road and seriously close to death. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

'One Week' poses a simple question: "What would you do if you had just one week to live?"
When the main character in this movie finds out that he has been diagnosed with cancer he goes through the typical stages of depression and finally embarks on a mission to find out what's im... read moreportant to him in life. This movie tackles the idea of the typical individuals situation; the idea that many of us fail to really capture and go after what is important in life and rather we 'settle' and live lives of repetitiveness and routine. Sometimes it takes tragedy or sometimes it's just too late when we finally figure out what we truly want out of life.
For an independent film, I thought this movie was absolute amazing; its plot, visuals, actors, and even the questions posed are all fairly basic yet it reaches out and touches emotional hot-spots that many movies fail to do.
I would recommend this to basically anyone! More particularly anyone who likes those motivational moments where you suddenly feel alive and start questioning what you want to do with your life, what your missing, and perhaps the biggest enlightenment who and what is most important to you.
And it can all be brought on through one simple question tackled by 'Ben Tyler'.

Filmic consideration on the ever popular musing "if you only had one week to live, what would you do?" (A popular variant I hear alla time: "what if you won the lottery?") Acoustic guitar heavy alt music and nice voice-over work by Campbell Scott complete this innocuous pause to think about what really matters.

One Week tells the story of a man named Ben who discovers that he has Stage 4 Cancer. This soon affects his life, family, and fiance. To escape his sadness, he goes trek to Western Canada on a motorcycle to spend his final weeks, days, or months.

I stumbled across this film on... read more Netflix under the "Romance" section which I think is misleading. There is a romantic relationship in the film but thats not the whole thing. The cover also looked like an entirely different film. The poster on the left of this review is more accurate. This is a very good and underrated film. Its a simple film with an easy plot to follow and it does not get all over the place.

Little-known actor, Joshua Jackson, does a great job as the lead role and knows how to carry the scenes where only he is visible well. The rest of the cast is terrific. The narrator was great and funny as well. Because of its simplicity, this gets a 90% but for a 100% it'll need to get rid of one thing: the narrator. He was necessary at some points and at others, he was not. Some scenes were told in music and pictures like a Kubrick film and it should have been like that.

Is it dramatic? Yes. It did warm my heart at the end.

One Week is a simple and very good indie Canadian drama. Simplicity is one signal of a good film in my opinion. I'm suggesting this film to Simon M., The Creep, Brantastic16, Wisenheimer, and anyone who want to see this great drama.

Not a horrible movie, just dull and depressing one though. Saw it at a film festival, and it wasn't horrible, but Ive seen better.

Unfortunately, a very good performance by Joshua Jackson and some solid scenery - almost too much Canadiana, but bearable - go to waste in this otherwise poorly written and acted film. The story is good, but the lines are bad, and Liane Balaban - who I usually like - is completel... read morey out of her league in the role and just appears to be going through the motions. A real letdown. I was expecting a homegrown companion to Motorcycle Diaries or Easy Rider, but One Week ran out of gas well before reaching its destination. And what's up with the gratuitous narration?

It was such a good film.. Sad, funny, and touching. Don't know what I would do if I was told I was going to die.. Maybe the same thing he did... This theme have been used in many movies & this film is certainly not among the good ones, The narration sucks & the film left me with a "who cares?" feeling
  • April 21, 2009
Most Canadian films possess a feel of being second rate products manufactured in a system that really has no care for the art. One Week is no different. it's a second rate Into the Wild.

Over the last few years, there has been a rise in big budget Canadian productions like Shake Hands with the Devil and Passchendaele that reflect on Canada's part in world history. There have even been some cool genre pics with a Canadian twist like Pontypool and Bon Cop Bad Cop. One Week is the quintessesntial Canadian movie, a film that is as much about Canada in 2009 as it is about a motorcyclist's journey to find himself. Unfortunately, all these films have that second rate feel to them, a sense that these movies are American films replaced with Canadian characters. But it's nice to see the attempt at producing films that are actually watchable.

Interesting, though somewhat meandering and overly philosophical. I found a sort of chest-puffing pleasure in pointing out familiar Canadian locales and cities (including my own!), though that served to be the majority of my entertainment. Don't get me wrong, the film is hardly... read more stuffy, but it does have a distinctive artsy, ever-so-slightly-patronizing feel that bothered me. But the character study is fun to watch, if only in an at-arms-length way.

A philosophical road move with a serious hard-on for all things Canada, the feature is a patchy but satisfying ride to self-actualization. Full Review

Despite its morbid plot underpinnings, One Week is less depressing than the average Canadian movie. Maybe it's because you can never feel more alive than when you see this country in all its glory. Full Review
