He tells Ellen she's needed at home to care for her mother, Kate (Meryl Streep), who's due for surgery. Ellen needs to get away from the problems of her relationship with her boyfriend Jordan (Nicky Katt), but she plans to continue work on the magazine article from home. In truth, Ellen is uncomfortable with her mother's various ladies club lunches, and holiday preparations, and she finds communication with her mother awkward. Once Ellen arrives back home, she's dismayed to find herself caught in the web of her mother's Middle America activities. Ellen's attitude changes when it becomes apparent this probably will be the final Thanksgiving and Christmas with all family members present. But tensions erupt as long-buried family secrets emerge. Locations in New Jersey were used to create the film's Eastern coastal college town. Shown at the 1998 Montreal Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

Sad, but very good story about a daughter dealing with the death by cancer of the mother she never really got along with. Surprisingly, this isn't overly sentimental. I found it quite moving.
Excellent performances by Meryl Streep and Renee zellweger.

meryl is very touching if only the rest of the movie matched her strong performance

    Pretty good and emotional.
  • March 29, 2009
Renee Zellweger's best film role, made before she was a real name. Meryl Streep is also amazing as her dying mother.

Okay, a lot of people might find this movie too long, or even boring, but those people have rocks for hearts. This is the rare instance where the movie is just as good as the book and the characters are as real as your neighbors when no one is watching. Renee Zellweger plays El... read morelen, a twenty-something New Yorker who moves back home to take care of her sick mother. She is very convincing as the angry daughter who would rather eat poop than become her mother, and although she seems cruel at times, you can still relate to her and understand what she?s going through. I just love this movie; there?s a scene b/n Ellen and Kate (her mom, Streep) where Kate pours her heart out to her daughter and it?s probably the best scene in a ?real? movie that I have ever seen. It really captures the strength of a mother.

The review by Marshall Fine is pretty accurate. The writing, acting and direction are top notch. My mom died of cancer, so it wasn't an easy film to watch. This movie has a lot to say, and what it has to say is worthwhile.

I got dragged to see in it when it was in theatres and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Sad movie though.
  • August 24, 2007
Excellent movie, again very heart warming, and definately a tear jerker but those are the movies I enjoy the most. Meryl Streep's & Renee Zellweger's performances were WONDERFUL.
  • August 21, 2007
Oh wow! This movie is really great but so sad at the same time. Meryl Streep and Renee Zellweger are great together in this movie!
  • August 3, 2007
a sad movie brilliantly acted by Meryl Streep and Renee Zellweger....that shows the love between a mother and a daughter while the mother is terminally ill....its really sad seein the mother, whos used to always helping herself, being helpless....but at the ending, u feel ful-fil... read moreled a little bit because the daughter seems to start a relationship with the dad again since it was broken earlier.......very good movie that depended on Meryl Streep's acting and thats why it was good!
