Hulk Hogan, in an inarguably appropriate casting choice, plays a professional wrestler in this action-packed drama. Rip (Hogan) is a grappling star who is approached by Brell (Kurt Fuller), the new he... read more read more...ad of the World Television Network. Brell wants Rip to wrestle on his network, but Rip insists on honoring his commitment to another outlet. Brell responds by launching a show called "Battle of the Tough Guys," in which the beefy regulars of a particularly rough drinking establishment fight each other on camera. Zeus (Tom "Tiny" Lister Jr.) soon emerges as the bad guy champion on this new show, and Brell uses Rip's friendship with his assistant Samantha (Joan Severance) to arrange a bout between Zeus and Rip. Rip is not at all interested until Zeus injures his brother and makes the fight a matter of personal pride. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

terrible and classic at the same time

It was cool when I was Little

I liked WWF when I was a teenager since in this Hulk Hogan's debut role of the muscle-bound wrestling film. At the final wrestling battle, Hulk Hogan vs Tiny Lester are cool and really tough.

20 years before Mickey Rourke in the Wrestler, Terry "Hulk" Hogan gave an Oscar worthy performance in a similar role. I'm kidding, it's crap lol.

"Whatcha gonna do, brother... When Rip and his bad movie runs wild on you?" Years before the NWO, and the monday night wars, Hulk Hogan was the WWF's meal ticket. He took time off after WM IV to make 'No Holds Barred,' essentially Vince McMahon's first big "screw you" to Atlanta ... read more(or Ted Turner and TBS). NHB is about Rip, the WWF champion, who is being hounded by the evil corporate bigwigs (read: Turner Broadcasting) to join their equally sinister big budget wrestling organization (read: WCW) so they can put the poor, innocent little WWF out of business. Forget Kevin Nash and Scott Hall on Nitro, this is the really flame that started the Monday Night wars. Much fighting and people crapping themselves (literally) ensues. This movie is the shits, but couple a shitty movie with the absolute worst theme song in movie history (No Holds Barred), and you have Hogan's crowning moment. Classic.

Finally a film where Hogan was almost believable, as a wrestler. the most positive thing I can say about this movie is, Joan Severance was HOT

This is Hulk Hogan's best acting job-which, considering that this is first major role beyond the squared circle, says a whole lot about the rest of his movies-and none of it any good. He's basically playing himself in this movie. The story is pure fodder-it's basically a "good vs... read more. evil" scenario.

I remember watching the old WWE shows on Saturday mornings and listening to Gorilla Monsoon shill this movie-in fact, on one episode, he said something to the effect of "they're talking Oscars for No Holds Barred!" which meant that it was going to suck out loud. For the most part, it did.

I haven't watched any of Hulk's other films-although I did manage to watch a couple of episodes of his TV show "Thunder in Paradise" which had all of the excitement of Army food.

3 stars because it isn't bad enough for me-it's mostly dull.

Hulk Hogan's best (and perhaps only) good performance, but he was playing a wrestler, so it's not much of a stretch.
  • April 6, 2007
Hulk Hogan's first leading role in a movie. also it introduced the first ever 8-sided wrestling ring. RIP 'EM!!

I have been looking for this movie for years...DVD, VHS, anything...can't find it anywhere. Hogan's first movie...pretty bad, but I still love it.

Barred is tremendously crude, unapologetically manipulative (Zeus finally breaks down Rip's reserve by crippling his kid brother), and aimed directly at easily entertained 13-year-old boys. Full Review

Try: No Holds Suck. Tiny Lister is awesome, but -- apart from The Scorpion King, The Princess Bride and The One and Only -- all movies involving 'wrestlers' are stupid.
