My friend and I watched this in hopes that it would be a documentary about the genre of Nerdcore and how it is a growing little genre and the culture around it. Maybe it would be funny too! Nope! It's about just one nerdcore rapping trying to turn it into a viable career. FAT CH... read moreANCE BUDDY! Your audience is custom built to know about TORRENTS! But mostly the problem is that the documentary is unprofessionally shot, poorly edited (it will breeze over problems like losing gear and play down any drama that might make it interesting) and I just found MC Frontalot and his band-mates to be uninteresting on and off the stage.

As a person into a lot of stuff still on the fringes of societal acceptance, I have to almost admit to being slightly embarrassed at how many of the various pop culture references I 'got' in various nerdcore raps. At a certain point you have to just think "wow, what a fucking do... read morerk I am", but it's definitely very amusing to hear people rapping about atypical subject matter.

The documentary follows a small tour taken by some of the larger acts in the sub-genre, painting an interesting picture of an unlikely group of rappers who've found an audience for their material scattered across America.

Fun stuff, give it a rental.

"MC Frontalot raps about all the things I care about--like Magic: The Gathering and internet porn addiction."

I've followed Nerdcore for years, ever since Penny Arcade first posted the link to Frontalot's music. As a subculture girl myself, it appealed to me on a lot of l... read moreevels. Mostly because I'm a huge fucking nerd.

Nerdcore Rising documents MC Frontalot's first national tour, culminating in his final stop at PAX. Part concert footage and part documentary, the film explores the motivations and inner-workings of the band themselves as well as the number of fans affected by the music. Frontalot is focus of this documentary and the mouthpiece of this grassroots, passion-driven music niche, which is fitting considering that he is the man who coined the term "nerdcore" and spearheaded the movement. Both he and his bandmates are painted as the quirky, charming and of course, nerdy people one would assume. There's an underlying sense of awareness, however, at the silliness of it all. Four grown men rapping about Star Wars and Zork, but four grown men clearly having a hell of a time doing it.

In seeing the fans (as well as some less-than-enthused concert goers), a very clear demographic presents itself. These are the trod-upon, the misfits, the internet-dwelling people whose unifying attribute is the general inability to comfortably inhabit any niche other than "nerd". Although "nerd" is not as stigmatized as it once was, with major films every year cashing in on comic books and video games and popularizing the culture, there is a difference between nerd chic and the real deal. These people fall into the latter, and Frontalot acts as a figure to rally behind, someone who shares their grief and their joy and it's incredibly touching to see the feeling of kinship that nerdcore inspires in these fans.

The concert footage is wonderful, the behind-the-scenes moments with the bands are hilarious, and the entire presentation is really fantastic. Give nerdcore a chance. I won't go so far as to say that it's going to blow up--but I imagine you'll be hearing about it soon enough.

"I can see the nerds here, and I know how hard it is for you, and I just have to tell you--that we run shit on the outside. We run shit. And that's the fuckin' truth."

None of this is especially new, but the band members are funny enough to keep you interested, especially if you like group Wookie imitations. Full Review
