Like many of Agatha Christie's mysteries, Murder on the Orient Express is predicated on an actual event, in this case the Lindbergh kidnapping. In the movie, everyone on board the Orient Express seems... read more read more... to have concluded that hateful financier Ratchett (Richard Widmark) was behind the abduction and murder of the infant daughter of a famed aviatrix. Thus, when Ratchett is himself found murdered, everyone is suspect. Normally, the police would handle the investigation, but the train has been stalled by a snowslide halfway between Istanbul and Paris. Thus, it's up to the insufferable but brilliant Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (an unrecognizable Albert Finney) to activate his "little grey cells" and determine who's guilty. Among the suspects are colorful characters played by Lauren Bacall, Martin Balsam, Jacqueline Bisset, Sean Connery, Wendy Hiller, John Gielgud, Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave, and Ingrid Bergman, whose performance won her a third Academy Award. (In her acceptance speech, Bergman apologized for her win, insisting that Day for Night's Valentina Cortese deserved the prize.) The first and best in a long line of contemporary Christie adaptations, the film scores on atmosphere, period detail, and richness of characterization. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A great Agatha Christie story but this version looks a little dated now.

I recently saw this movie because there are so many great stars in it, but that's not always a good idea. This movie is overloaded with stars, and lacking in excitement. It has a couple of interesting scenes here and there, but I figured out who was involved in the murder early... read more in the story because I recognized his voice. When they get to the explanation at the end of the crime, it gets really confusing too. Overall, it's not that bad, but it's not good either.

Great fun! The undeniably best version of any Agatha Christie novel and one of the most enjoyable films ever made. Incredible group of stars perfectly cast down to the smallest part. Ingrid Bergman won the Oscar and she is fine but Betty Bacall is the real scene stealer here. Blu... read morestery and boorish she is the perfect portrait of the overbearing tourist you want to avoid. Vanessa Redgrave looking great is loose and puckish and well matched with Sean Connery, a shame they never costarred again. Jacqueline Bisset, at the height of her beauty, gives a nice account of a high strung countess. Originally Marlene Dietrich was sought for the imperious Princess Dragomiroff and surely she would have been great but Wendy Hiller makes the part her own with a larger than life performance. Finney makes a terrific Poirot with an astonishing makeup job. Speaking of which both the production and wardrobe design are sensational. If you've never seen this gem do so with haste.

I do love me a good murder mystery and I used to read Agatha Christie as a kid. And Then There Were None was one of my very favorites and this was certainly in that kind of fashion. Sneaky. I liked it. And loved the talent, none better than Albert Finney. Even though I have never... read more read this exact book, I know the Christie style and I thought this was very well done and cinematically interesting.

Agatha Christie's ultimate whodunit speeds into the twenty-first century.

Albert Finney is marvelous as Poirot in this classy and glamorous whodunit
  • August 9, 2007
Great cast of legends, Albert Finney does a marvelous job as Poirot, as well as Sidney Lumet's clean direction. overall an insanely entertaining whodunit.

A superb Agatha Cristie murder mystery classic. Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney) was a weird and greasy detective character. There are huge classic stars in this movie. It had a nice look to it.

very classy movie made out of an amazing book. one of lumet's jewels.
  • January 29, 2007
I was a little upset because I'd already read the book, so I knew how it would end. Boo!

Still, the movie is great on all other levels. It's full of basically every bankable older star in the mid-70s, and as such it displays mature and fantastic performances. (Albeit underwritte... read moren ones - with twelve murder suspects to be interrogated, they can't spend too much time dwelling on one.)

Closed circle mysteries like this are always the most exciting.

Only Finney goes to extra length here to play the finicky Poirot, though for some reason Bergman was singled out for an Academy Award. Full Review

Though the ending's pretty obvious, even for those who haven't read the book, you can't deny the power of this cast.

The real knockout performance comes from Finney, deservedly nominated for an eccentric turn that's unlike anything else he's ever attempted. Full Review

Much of the film truly does belong to Finney's Poirot -- and to his scenes with Martin Balsam and George Colouris --all of which are endlessly entertaining and fascinating. Full Review
