Two teens decide to commit the perfect murder just because they can. They figure they can set it up that obviously the murder was committed by a local janitor/drug dealer. Of course Sandra Bullock just knows that it wasn't the drug dealer, and the battle of wills and more betwe... read more

I often wonder why this is a much loved film of mine, it's certainly not one of the best murder tales nor is it the most suspenseful of Thrillers, but I feel the reason lies in the forensic analysis and planning of a perfect murder, alongside the battle of intelligences and ego. ... read more

Two high school students plot and carry out perfect murders but hot on their tail is Cassie (Sandra) a detective. The movie has a good plot.

Supposedly hitchcockian thriller (probably because of the resemblance between the youthful killers and their counterparts in Rope) this is very predictable stuff. It lacks drama, and Sandra Bullock's character is a walking cliche.

Argh . . . Ryan Gosling? I don't get it. And Michael Pitt? Why? A total waste of time. Bullock needs a new team of advisors.
Critic Reviews
It's well worth catching for its interesting twists on the Leopold and Loeb story. Full Review
As long as Schroeder stays with the kids, the film musters a good deal of restless tabloid intensity, and even the occasional twinge of pathos. Full Review
Turns potentially forgettable formula into something strangely diverting.
Murder by Numbers' isn't a great movie, but it's a perfectly acceptable widget.
[Gayton's script] telegraphs every discovery and layers on the gloss of convenience. Full Review
A respectable but uninspired thriller that's intelligent and considered in its details, but ultimately weak in its impact. Full Review
Works as another uncompromisingly adult movie that assumes its audience is intelligent and doesn't have to cut narrative corners to make viewers feel safe. Full Review
