The sensationalistic murder of diet guru Dr. Herman Tarnower is explored in this stylized take on the tabloid cover story from first-time director Phyllis Nagy. As the inventor of the popular "Scarsda... read more read more...le Diet," Dr. Herman Tarnower (Ben Kingsley) became an overnight success during the peak of the early '80s diet craze. Despite the popularity of the Dr. Tarnower's revolutionary "lose one pound per day" diet, the womanizing ways of the Casanova cardiologist would soon come to a brutal end at the hands of his jealous, prescription drug-addicted lover Jean Harris (Annette Bening). Driven to despair after their 14-year romance failed to result in marriage and enraged by Dr. Tarnower's shameless status as a ladies' man, Harris confronts her former lover in one violent, final act of desperation. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The film is loaded with fine performers doing good work but the people that are the subjects of this piece are either unlikable (Tarnower) or pathetic (Jean Harris) so it's hard to become too involved in the whole thing.

I found this movie a bit boring because the storyline wasn't all that interesting. Bening stars as Mrs. Harris, a troublesome woman who is being accused of murdering Herman after being in a relationship with him for 14 years. Herman had asked her to marry him but later backed out... read more from this. This movie shows Mrs. Harris' suffering from mental illness. She may even have been suicidal at the time of the murder. The acting was fine but I thought that the movie was a bit too boring at times.

True Story, well acted by Annette Bening. This Woman was so Over The Top that you find yourself sympathetic to this Murderous

Glossy and satiric telling of the Jean Harris-Herbert Tarnower affair, and his subsequent murder(?) at her hands. Bening's Jean starts out as a beguiling divorcee entranced by the charismatic Scarsdale diet doctor (played brilliantly by Ben Kingsley). Eventually, his eye wander... read mores to younger women, and her grip on reality wanders as well. Film's climax shows different perspectives of what might have happened that night at his home when he is fatally wounded - even now, it's hard to tell the facts from the emotional fiction. Cloris Leachman has a juicy turn as the doctor's skeptical sister.

For some reason I just wasn't as in to this as I thought I would be.. It is most likely just that I was distracted.. I'll watch it again eventually.. It reminds me of a combination of American Beauty and Running with Scissors.. and I love BOTH of them.. and Ben Kingsley is ... read morea marvelous actor.. I always like his movies. So, I'll see if I feel the same way when I get a chance to watch it with no distractions.

A really bad TV movie. Annette Bening and Ben Kingsley, who are usually great, can't make this work at all. I expected something really good and that's not what I got at all.

true telling of the death of the creator of the scarsdale diet, based mostly on the actual transcripts from the trial. some great actresses showed up for this one. very interesting to watch.

Tried to find something else to watch, but ended up watching to the end. Interesting presentation. As far as the story, no sympathy for any of the characters. Once was enough, so no DVD purchase here.

Playwright Phyllis Nagy's film directorial bow is an uneven affair. Full Review

The film was 'inspired' by Shana Alexander's book, but the tone comes straight out of the tabloids. This tone lies somewhere south of smugness but north of pure derision.

It might not be up to the level of, say, Reversal of Fortune, but it's also far above your typical movie-of-the-week network filler. Full Review

The story is interesting, the characters are interesting, and while never boring, the picture never greatly impresses nor has much in the way of insight. Full Review
