A teacher belatedly discovers just how important his job really is in this emotional drama. Glenn Holland (Richard Dreyfuss) is a man with a deep love of music and a desire to write at least one piece... read more read more... of lasting significance. However, playing piano in cocktail lounges while he works on his own compositions doesn't pay the bills, so in 1965 he reluctantly accepts a job as a high school music teacher. Over the next 30 years, Holland is able to teach a great deal about both music and life to thousands of kids who pass through the various classes he leads and school bands he directs; however, he finds it easier to reach his students than his son Cole (played, as he grows older, by Nicholas John Renner, Joseph Anderson, and Anthony Natale), who is deaf, which drives a wedge between Glenn and his wife Iris (Glenne Headly). Richard Dreyfuss earned an Academy Award nomination as Best Actor for Mr. Holland's Opus; the cast also includes Olympia Dukakis, William H. Macy, and Jay Thomas. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This is a great movie. I love it! I wish I had Mr. Holland as my music teacher :) So inspirational!

It's a sweet film about the sacrifices one must make. Richard Dreyfuss remains one of our more underrated actors.

As much as I like this film and, more specifically, like the performance of Richard Dreyfuss, there is one moment that absolutely makes my skin crawl. When Mr. Holland accompanies one of his students to the bus station as she leaves to pursue a music career in New York, he kisse... read mores her right smack dab on the lips! No, no, no, no, and hell no. A high school teacher does not and should not do that. If he does he should never teach again. Period. I don't care if he is having a midlife crisis. That's so very, very wrong.

At times mawkish and overly sentimental but still compulsively watchable. Dreyfuss gives a terrific performance aided by a cast who don't hit a wrong step. I enjoyed this movie. I guess I am just a sucker for inspirational, hopeful movies - ones where the character doesn't realize the impact he is having on those around him.

As much a musical as an emotional journey, about a high school teacher who seeks fullfillment in becoming a world class composer, but instead finds it through his teaching over the course of time. Besides the wonderful music, we are also treated to a very moving performance by Ri... read morechard Dreyfous, who is just one of those actors who was born to stand in front of a camera, as every role he does seems to come natural to him. Coming to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen him do a half-assed job, regardless of the material he has to work with. Anyway, whatever the case may be, this is surely a movie well worth seeing. Even more so as it ends on a very high note ;-)

This movie is kind of sad but it does have a very good storyline. It moves kind of slow but the end makes it worth it.

I watched this some time in high school in chorus and didn't remember much of it. I watched it again recently and I still enjoyed it. It makes me sad that art programs are being cut from schools.

boring at times but very good movie

Extraordinatry lifetime of a music teacher by helping his students reach their goals. Dreyfuss did very well in American sign language on the scenes to communicate with his deaf son.
