Martha (Martina Gedeck) is the chef of a popular Hamburg eatery... read more read more... who fusses and obsesses over each dish before it leaves the kitchen. The demands of her job and her natural shyness keep her from breaking out of her routine to meet new people. When her sister suddenly dies in a car accident, Martha adopts Lina, her eight-year-old niece. Martha's life soon completely changes -- not only must she adjust herself to new parental role, but she must help Lina deal with her grief over the loss of her mother. Martha gets unexpected help from Mario, Martha's hunky new sous chef, who is not only a whiz on the chopping block but knows sundry magic tricks and jokes to keep Lina's spirits afloat. Just as Martha starts to grow attached to the girl, however, the possibility of Lina returning to the custody of her father arises. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Yummy from beginning to end. Not only is Martha quirky to watch, but the food preparation alone is worth sitting through this movie. Sweet and stylish. Passionate. Heart warming.

This was a great film, The one I rented had English Subtitles and was in German. It started out slow, but really picked up and was very funny. If your into subtitle Movies get this one or rent it, you will not be sorry.

This is the most charming movie I have seen in a long time. It was very linear as far as foreign films go so if you want a very twisty, R Rated (as this is a PG film) foreign film this isn't it. What you get here is a great character development/study, a wonderful love story, and... read more to watch a person who desperately needs to break out of her self-constructed cage...Well anyway...Martina Gedeck plays the marvelous Martha, a woman/cook who is very stuck in her ways and needs a few things to shake up her world a bit before she actually decides to smell the coffee as it were. You are able to watch this character blossom utilizing the vehicles of therapy and food to convey changes in character. Don't be surprised if you get REALLY hungry watching this film (much as you might if you were to be watching the incredible film, "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman). This is a wonderful movie and will leave you feeling just right.

Effortlessly enjoyable dramedy about food and family.

An intriguing movie. Martha is a chef in a upscale restaurant when one day she gets several surprises. Her sister tragically dies in a car accident while on her way to see her, and now must raise her eight year old niece Lina. Her boss hires an Italian sous-chef, and now must ... read moreshare the kitchen and all other responsibilities. On the suggestion of her boss, she sees a therapist weekly in hopes that she can curb and manage her anger. Martha must now accept the changes in her life.
Great cast- Martina Gedeck, Sergio Castellitto, Maxime Foerste, August Zirner, Sibylle Canonica, Katja Studt, and Ulrich Thomsen. Worthy!

Charming film with a delightful Martina Gedeck.

Maybe in German it's just seems meaner but this movie is nice enough.

Having watched the American adaptation "No Reservations" previously, the plot of the movie quickly became familiar to me. Nonetheless, it does provide an entertaining watch as a whole.

I have to say I did not know this was the original and I liked it , like most originals better the the american version. we tend to suck at remakes and seem to think we can always do it better when sometimes we just can't. I wish there was more gumption to be creative and come up... read more with something that is original and worthwhile .

Watched this over the summer for lack of something better to do, and I actually really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it if you don't mind foreign films and you can deal with something paced a bit slowly.

Though utterly predictable, this kitchen-set romantic comedy about a severe German woman and a fun-loving Italian cook, has a certain charm, and it's about food, which speaks well for commercial appeal. Full Review

Nettelbeck has given the viewer a genuine catharsis and a cinematic meal that isn't perfect -- but is all the better for it.

As much as any other motion picture that employs the preparation and consumption of food as a key element, Mostly Martha provides the perfect blend of cinematic nourishment and gratification. Full Review

If Mostly Martha is mostly unsurprising, it's still a sweet, even delectable diversion.
