Director James Ivory brings his subdued, "Masterpiece Theater" style to a forbidden subject -- homosexual love. Maurice is based on E.M. Forster's suppressed 1914 novel that was held back from publica... read more read more...tion until after his death. The film takes place at Cambridge, before World War I, when homosexuality was outlawed in Great Britain. Clive (Hugh Grant), an aristocratic Englishman with a life of privilege, suddenly shocks his close friend Maurice (James Wilby) by declaring his love for him. Maurice is initially stunned by the pronouncement, but in the end finds himself giving Clive a passionate kiss and telling him that he loves him as well. Clive, in the stiff-upper-lip British manner, considers their love to be more of an intellectual concept, but Maurice becomes passionate about the affair. Clive, afraid of being exposed as a homosexual, backs off and breaks up with Maurice for marriage, family, and politics. Maurice is crestfallen, but then he has a passionate affair with Clive's gamekeeper, Scudder (Rupert Graves), and Maurice and Scudder decide to risk their reputations by openly living together as lovers. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

This is a Gay 101 movie -- Everyone should see -- The love was real, and it is a true story --

I've never read the novel but I can't say this movie inspired me to do so. It's long and meandering, I never got a very strong sense of any of the characters, and the ending just didn't work for me at all. There were one or two very moving moments (the last shot of Clive looking ... read moreout the window especially struck me) but overall, nothing really connected with me. I just find myself struggling to remember it.

One of the 1st gay themed movie I ever watched. Good acting and good story about that time period in England. Loved it.

What what...a gay movie made in the 80's with a happy ending? James and Hugh fall in love at Cambridge and while James wishes to continue their love affair, Hugh's fear of being exposed moves him into a sexless and somewhat loveless marriage. James, unwilling to compromise falls ... read morein love with a man of a different class and while that does cause a little conflict, James lets his heart rule instead of an intolerant society.

james wilby, hugh grant and rupert graves do the lesser known merchatn-ivory 'maurice' well. it is a complex story but it is very emotional and pretty much realistiin its depiction of gay life among the british aristocracy. they weren't too fond of gay men back then(reference 'w... read moreilde' as well). i hope things have changed.

Perhaps my favorite movie of all time. Beautifully acted, extremely loyal to the original novel by Forster, and deeply moving.

disclaimer: If you are uncomfortable with homosexuality, Do Not Watch this.
E M Forster is one of my all time favorite authors. I can not say enough good things. A fabulous romance.

My favorite Merchant/Ivory film. This is a coming of age story about a young and privileged man falling in love with a man from the lower classes.

Maurice falls in love with Clive's gamekeeper Alec in Edwardian england. The jewel in Merchant-Ivory's crown and the only thing Hugh Grant has ever done that is worth seeing.
