instead of the usual first person perspective of stevenson's jekyll/hyde saga, herein the action is viewed from the eyes of a possibly abused country servant girl, well played by julia roberts (the absolute best i've ever seen her). moody atmospherics and a paced timing - not to... read more

Murky, mushy, glacially slow, and devoid of suspense, with one-note performances from the stars. Julia Roberts, unable to deploy her trademark smile, cowers like a scared rabbit, while John Malkovich inexplicably plays Jekyll and Hyde as looking and sounding almost exactly alike.

its watchable
but not a great version of the story of jekly and hdye.
Its acted well by both Roberts and Malkovich and its watchable and has funny scenes and it does keep you guessing for a while but theres not much to the storyline! -

This movie captures my heart. Anyway, besides me, I think Julia Roberts played it all so well, even though Malkovich stole the spotlight all throughout the movie, I have to say this has to be one of the most best played roles Roberts has done in her career (despite what the criti... read more

Ruinously boring, but with a few meager strengths to it. It's a neat stab at period horror and Stephen Frears pulled off the atmosphere of the tale very well...but there's an odd disassociation that comes with knowing the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde already. I felt like I wa... read more

I really liked it, it was a different spin on a well known storyline. Perhaps I say that because I'm a sucker for horror romance (and John Malkovich with long hair), but I am a girl after all and should be allowed this vice. Ending was a let down, but it could hardly have had a h... read more

I watched this a year ago or so, and as the main reviewer states, the finale must not have been than hot as I cannot remember the ending.

This movie is really good, and the only thing keeping it from being great is it's pace. It's just this side of inert. Apart from that, it's witty and subtle and is based on a really brilliant idea. John Malkovich is superb in this, and I just find Hyde's fascination for Mary to b... read more

This should have been so much better with Malkovich in the Jekyll/Hyde role, but the screenwriter played fast and loose with the original story, and that cost it points.
Critic Reviews
Sluggish and interminable, Mary Reilly makes good on little of its potential to be disturbing and none of its chance to be emotionally involving. Full Review
Unfortunately, your response to the bizarre story of terror and lust that dare not speak their name is pretty well limited to Roberts' response -- which is, in turn, limited by her technique. Full Review
A perversely courageous disaster that audiences will simply hate.
Mary Reilly works as Gothic melodrama because it understands the genre so well. Full Review
The story lacks purpose.
Director Frears seems more interested in the atmosphere than the narrative.
Mary Reilly is haunting, not only because of its foggy, shadowy settings, but because of the questions it encourages us to ask about ourselves and others. Full Review
Certainly Julia Roberts' strangest role, and she does an OK job.
[Roberts's] acting is of the Melrose Place/Andrew Shue variety, her eyes blank and mouth often agape (not unlike the photo of her used in the print ads). Full Review
