Based on the novel by Valerie Martin, this gothic suspense story offers a fresh perspective on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic horror tale Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by presenting the material from a di... read more read more...fferent viewpoint -- that of Mary Reilly (Julia Roberts), an Irish servant girl who has come to work for esteemed surgeon Dr. Henry Jekyll (John Malkovich). Mary is fascinated but also intimidated by her new employer, while the doctor seems to take a personal interest in her that goes beyond mere professional courtesy, much to the annoyance of Mr. Poole (George Cole), Jekyll's brutish manservant who also appears to have his eye on her. Jekyll's interest in Mary increases when he learns that she was abused as a child by her violent and repressive father. The doctor seems to take a keen interest in the violent and uncontrollable side of human nature. One day, he announces to his housekeeping staff that his new colleague, Edward Hyde, may be dropping by unexpectedly and not to be alarmed at his presence. Just as she's become attracted to the studious Dr. Jekyll, Mary is fascinated by the brash and impulsive Mr. Hyde, though he carries an air of danger with him at all times -- and Mary doesn't realize at first that he is merely a manifestation of the darker side of Jekyll's personality. Mary Reilly also features Glenn Close as the Madame Mrs. Farraday. Stephen Frears -- who previously worked with Close, Malkovich and screenwriter Christopher Hampton on 1988's Dangerous Liaisons -- directed. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

instead of the usual first person perspective of stevenson's jekyll/hyde saga, herein the action is viewed from the eyes of a possibly abused country servant girl, well played by julia roberts (the absolute best i've ever seen her). moody atmospherics and a paced timing - not to... read more mention the interesting "my boyfriend is a drug addict" underpinnings - add to the classic horror feel of this and malkovich? ... born to play this role: cool, detached and bored as hell as jekyll; passionate, violent and out-of-control as hyde.

Murky, mushy, glacially slow, and devoid of suspense, with one-note performances from the stars. Julia Roberts, unable to deploy her trademark smile, cowers like a scared rabbit, while John Malkovich inexplicably plays Jekyll and Hyde as looking and sounding almost exactly alike.

    its watchable
but not a great version of the story of jekly and hdye.
Its acted well by both Roberts and Malkovich and its watchable and has funny scenes and it does keep you guessing for a while but theres not much to the storyline!

This movie captures my heart. Anyway, besides me, I think Julia Roberts played it all so well, even though Malkovich stole the spotlight all throughout the movie, I have to say this has to be one of the most best played roles Roberts has done in her career (despite what the criti... read moreques say!). In addition, Glen Close, as always, plays a perfectly wonderful, hard and wreched woman.

tense and engaging, but more drama than scares

Ruinously boring, but with a few meager strengths to it. It's a neat stab at period horror and Stephen Frears pulled off the atmosphere of the tale very well...but there's an odd disassociation that comes with knowing the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde already. I felt like I wa... read mores behind the plot and knew too much about it all at the same time.

Julia Roberts is a disaster in this film and it's all because of her accent - or namely, her inability to utilize it or keep it consistent. John Malkovich isn't all that great either.

    This one's forgettable.

I really liked it, it was a different spin on a well known storyline. Perhaps I say that because I'm a sucker for horror romance (and John Malkovich with long hair), but I am a girl after all and should be allowed this vice. Ending was a let down, but it could hardly have had a h... read moreappy ending. Also enjoyed seeing Glenn Close as a Madame for some reason.

I watched this a year ago or so, and as the main reviewer states, the finale must not have been than hot as I cannot remember the ending.

This movie is really good, and the only thing keeping it from being great is it's pace. It's just this side of inert. Apart from that, it's witty and subtle and is based on a really brilliant idea. John Malkovich is superb in this, and I just find Hyde's fascination for Mary to b... read moree delicious. Glenn Close is equally spicy, which makes it a shame that she appears so briefly.

This should have been so much better with Malkovich in the Jekyll/Hyde role, but the screenwriter played fast and loose with the original story, and that cost it points.

The film is too mannered, too stuffy. Full Review

Sluggish and interminable, Mary Reilly makes good on little of its potential to be disturbing and none of its chance to be emotionally involving. Full Review

Unfortunately, your response to the bizarre story of terror and lust that dare not speak their name is pretty well limited to Roberts' response -- which is, in turn, limited by her technique. Full Review

Mary Reilly works as Gothic melodrama because it understands the genre so well. Full Review

Director Frears seems more interested in the atmosphere than the narrative.

Mary Reilly is haunting, not only because of its foggy, shadowy settings, but because of the questions it encourages us to ask about ourselves and others. Full Review

Certainly Julia Roberts' strangest role, and she does an OK job.

[Roberts's] acting is of the Melrose Place/Andrew Shue variety, her eyes blank and mouth often agape (not unlike the photo of her used in the print ads). Full Review
